Yelp?s Biggest Shareholders: Who Owns What And Who Sold What

Yelp shares sold to ElevationIn February 2010, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman and chairman Max Levchin each pocketed $15 million each in a private sale of stock to Elevation Partners, which previously had bought $25 million worth of shares from the company in Yelp's series E financing. The private purchases was part of another $36.8 million Elevation paid individual shareholders, including Stoppelman and Levchin. It is increasingly common for growth investors like Elevation or DST to provide founders and early shareholders with some liquidity before an IPO. Now that Yelp has filed to go public, these details are coming out in its S-1. Stoppelman and Levchin are still the two largest individual shareholders in Yelp. Stoppelman owns 11.1 percent of the company, while Levchin actually owns a little bit more, with 13.8 percent. Depending on what Yelp's valuation will be at its IPO, those stakes could be worth more than $100 million each (assuming a $1 billion market cap).

How Russia's Martian moon probe got stuck orbiting Earth

Launched Tuesday, Russia's Phobos-Grunt spacecraft was meant to explore the Martian moon Phobos. But, in what could mark the fourth Mars probe failure in a row, Phobos-Grunt now threatens to become another piece of space junk uselessly orbiting Earth.?

A robotic Russian spacecraft that launched on a mission to the Mars moon Phobos Tuesday (Nov. 8) is apparently stuck in Earth orbit, but hope for the probe is not lost yet, according to news reports.

The?Phobos-Grunt spacecraft launched?at 3:16 p.m. EST (2016 GMT) Tuesday and was supposed to be on its way to Phobos by now. The probe separated from its Zenit rocket properly, but its own thrusters then failed to fire in order to send the spacecraft streaking toward Mars, Russian officials said.

"It has been a tough night for us because we could not detect the spacecraft [after the separation]," Russian space agency chief Vladimir Popovkin said, Russian news agency?RIA Novosti reported. "Now we know its coordinates and we found out that the [probe's] engine failed to start."

Popovkin added that engineers aren't yet sure why Phobos-Grunt's engine didn't ignite, according to RIA Novosti. It's possible the onboard computers didn't send the proper command, he said.

Whatever the cause, the malfunction dealt a serious blow to the?$163 million Phobos-Grunt mission, which aims to grab bits of Phobos' surface and send them back to Earth by 2014. But there may still be hope for the spacecraft, Russia's first attempt at an interplanetary mission since 1996.

"We will attempt to reboot the program," RIA Novosti reported Popovkin as saying. "The spacecraft is currently on a support orbit, the fuel tanks have not been jettisoned, and the fuel has not been spent."

Engineers have about three days to figure out and fix the problem, Popovkin added. After that time, Phobos-Grunt's batteries will run out, and the spacecraft will likely turn into just another piece of space debris. [Photos: Russia's Phobos-Grunt Mission to Mars Moon]

Phobos-Grunt is also carrying China's first Mars probe, a small spacecraft called Yinghuo 1, that is supposed to separate from Phobos-Grunt and enter orbit around Mars.

If Phobos-Grunt cannot be salvaged, it would mark the fourth straight Mars failure for Russia.

The nation's Phobos 1 and Phobos 2 spacecraft, which launched in July 1988, suffered critical failures before their missions were complete. And the Mars 96 probe crashed into the Pacific Ocean shortly after liftoff in November 1996.

Russia is not alone in suffering setbacks with Mars missions. Historically, about half of all missions aimed at the Red Planet have failed, according to NASA records.

NASA also currently plans to launch a new U.S. mission to Mars this month. The $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission will send a car-size rover called Curiosity to explore the huge Gale crater on Mars.

Several spacecraft are actively studying Mars today. They include orbiting spacecraft operated by NASA and the European Space Agency, as well as NASA's Opportunity rover on the planet's surface.

Intel fund focuses on mobile applications (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Intel (INTC.O) is launching a $100 million fund to invest in companies creating applications and content that complement its mobile chips, which have struggled to find a foothold in tablets and smartphones.

The Intel Capital AppUp Fund, named after the chipmaker's online software store, has so far invested in Urban Airship, a mobile marketing company, and 4tiitoo, a German software firm, Intel said in a statement.

Intel is racing to establish itself in the mobile computing market, where manufacturers mostly use processors made with energy efficient technology licensed from Britain's ARM Holdings (ARM.L).

Intel's AppUp online store promotes the development and sale of applications built for the MeeGo operating system that runs on many netbooks using Intel's Atom mobile chips.

The new fund follows the creation of a $300 million fund earlier this year to promote technology for a new category of sleek laptops the Santa Clara, California company has dubbed Ultrabooks.

Intel is racing to refocus its lead in manufacturing technology to create processors better suited for tablets and smartphones requiring low-power consumption.

Gamer parents name newborn son after Skyrim character (Yahoo! News)

A chance arrival means a lifetime of free video games for the lucky newborn and his parents

For expecting parents, coming up with a suitable name for a new bundle of joy can often be difficult. But when gamer couple Megan and Eric Kellermeyer realized their due date ? 11/11/11 ? was the same as the release day of the highly-anticipated Skyrim role-playing game, they made a big decision. After reading a post on developer Bethesda's blog proposing that soon-to-be parents consider naming their child "Dovahkiin" ? a word that means "Dragonborn" in the Skyrim world ? they committed to the plan.

Originally, the developer's blog post seemed to be made in jest, and with a hefty disclaimer noting that "Bethesda Softworks is not responsible for your parenting," it appeared that it would be left as a joke and nothing more. However, as word began to spread of the company's somewhat humorous suggestion, the company sweetened the deal. In an update to the original story, Bethesda promised that anyone willing to name their child Dovahkiin would receive every one of the developer's games free for life, on top of other unnamed goodies.

In a post on the couple's blog they announced their intentions, and the waiting game began. After all, newborns often miss their due date by a number of days, or even weeks, so fate would ultimately decide the child's name. But this time, the tiny warrior arrived right on time, and on 11/11/11, Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer was born. The lucky couple contacted Bethesda, who verified the new baby's name and birthdate, and held true to their promise, granting the couple ? and Dovahkiin himself ? every one of the company's games free for life.

In the game Skyrim, you play as the last in a long line of warriors blessed with the blood of dragons. This gift allows you to wield powerful magic to help you complete your quest. Despite being able to customize your name as you see fit, townsfolk in the game frequently refer to your character as Dovahkiin and Dragonborn. Dovahkiin Kellermeyer will hear plenty of that name in the years to come, and who knows, if dragons show up to terrorize our cities as they do in the fictional realm of Skyrim, we may just call upon his services.

Probiotics appear to mitigate pancreatitis: Surprising hypothetical mechanism warrants further investigation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2011) ? A probiotic treatment appears to mitigate pancreatitis in an animal model, leading to a new hypothesis of how probiotics may act, according to a paper in the November Applied and Environmental Microbiology. The bacterial species most closely associated with improvement in health was discovered for the first time in the course of this research.

Severe acute pancreatitis is a critical illness that is characterized by intestinal barrier dysfunction. While it is usually self-limiting, in 20 to 30 percent of cases patients develop serious disease, including systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis, and/or multiple organ dysfunction, which frequently cause death.

In this study, Jacoline Gerritsen of University Medical Center, Utrecht, the Netherlands, and her collaborators gave one group of rats probiotic on a daily basis, beginning five days before they induced acute pancreatitis, and continuing briefly afterwards, before they sacrificed the animals. Another set of rats received a placebo.

The major finding: in the small intestine, higher than normal numbers of the newly discovered bacterium, "commensal rat ileum bacterium" (CRIB) were correlated with reduced severity of acute pancreatitis in animals that had been fed probiotic. These animals had less infection of remote organs, less infection of dying and dead pancreatic tissues, and less severe immune response during acute pancreatitis, as demonstrated by lower plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines. CRIB, a member of the genus Clostridium, is not a constituent of the probiotic (Ecologic 641), but rather a benign bacterium that normally inhabits the lower gut. "?these results suggest that effects of this multispecies probiotic mixture? are mediated by stimulation of a not previously described gut commensal bacterium? which protects the host from severe sepsis," according to the report.

"This research has provided new knowledge on the possible mechanisms behind probiotic action," says Gerritsen. "In addition, it shows that bacterial species inhabiting the small intestine might be very important for health. Up until now, medical researchers have neglected the small intestine, because it is very difficult to obtain such samples from humans." That needs to change, she says.
