Thembela Kepe, co-editor of Rural Resistance in South Africa: The Mpondo Revolts after Fifty Years, delivered a talk titled ?The relevance of past rural resistance in contemporary South Africa: The Case of the Mpondo Revolts? at the National Arts Festival?s Wordfest on Sunday, reports Sarah-Jane Bradfield for Rhodes University.
?Our focus should not only be on the past and our history but on documenting what is happening right now in rural areas. This is critically important for our history as a nation?, Kepe said, ?A lot is going on in rural areas and we are not documenting it sufficiently to help deepen our understanding of the people in these areas?.
While much has been written about popular resistance of the marginalised people of South Africa, as well as its violent repression by the state in urban areas, very little attention has been paid to resistance by the rural poor.
This is according to Professor Thembela Kepe of the Department of Geography, University of Toronto and visiting professor in the Department of Geography at Rhodes University.
