Mom Drop Box: What new moms really need

Mom Drop Box: What new moms really need

What new moms really need

I leave in a few days for a weekend trip to visit one of my best friends who's just had a baby. ?She now has 2 under 2, and I can't wait to meet her new little boy. I can't wait to see his big brother. ?I'm excited to see my friend and her husband and catch up. ?

I'm leaving my family behind for this trip. ?Why? ?Because my goal for this trip is to be a support for their family. ?Especially my girlfriend; I want to help her however I can.

I know they would love to see my family, but 4 kids + 4 adults + a Florida bungalow = loudness & busyness & just too much. ?Too much for a new baby & a family still getting to know each other.

It wasn't long ago that I was bringing home my babies. ?I had great baby showers & received lots of gifts to get ready for the baby. ?

But when the baby finally came, what mattered wasn't the onesies or the matching nursery sets or the all-natural bath wash. ?It was the support.? Sometimes I had an overabundance of it, and sometimes I didn't have enough.

Many - myself included- tend to associate a new baby with a mother or mother-in-law swooping in to aid the husband and basically take care of the new baby & the new mama. ?Yet, many times, that ideal just doesn't happen. ? Too many women have broken or fractured relationships with those ladies in their lives to make that work, or the moms just aren't able to get there. ?Or we assume that the new parents must have lots of friends and family around, so what do they need us for?

It's a dangerous assumption. ?My husband and I, for example, each have one sibling, and they both live across the country from us. ?Neither came in for either of our children's births. ?We did have some friends that gave support, but not everybody does.

With new moms dealing with healing from childbirth, coping with out-of-whack hormones, and figuring out how to care for their new baby all at once, it's no wonder that so many women slip into postpartum?depression.

I never experienced that, but I did have the baby blues after having both of my children for a few days, and it made me feel totally off-kilter emotionally. ?I couldn't control my tears and got really upset with my husband over the littlest things.?

When I had my daughter, there came a pivotal moment. ?I felt like I was slipping. ?I was having real trouble breast-feeding, and I felt like I couldn't handle the combination of a new baby & my toddler.?

Like an angel, my aunt showed up with dinner. ?She saw that things weren't going well, and took it upon herself to call a lactation consultant. ?I believe that phone call gave me the support I needed to continue on with breastfeeding, and without it I might have given up. ??

This friend that I am going to see showed up too. ?She drove across the state & stayed for a few days, and reminded me - again & again- that her job was to help. ?With the baby, with my toddler, with dishes, with cooking- wherever I needed it.

Now I am so happy that I can do the same for her. ?With the exception of a few baby gifts, I have no idea who gave me what for my baby showers. ?But I can tell you exactly who gave me help & support me when I needed it. ?And I don't think I'll ever forget, or ever stop being grateful.

Control4 delivers home automation Starter Kit for under $1,000 including installation, we go hands-on

Control4 delivers home automation Starter Kit for under $1,000 including installation, we go handson video

Replacing a house full of switches and dials with a single remote seems a desirable proposition, but less-than-intuitive setup processes and fees that run far into the thousands make a disconnected home the only option for some. Like other home automation system manufacturers, Control4 has a bounty of offerings that can run up pricing into that out-of-reach range, but if you're looking to adjust audio and video in a single room, the new Starter Kit should get you going for just shy of a grand, including installation. That price includes a HC-250 Controller, which delivers IR control for up to eight components (via splitters connected to the four IR ports on the rear), serial control for up to two receivers or other systems and IP control for an unlimited number of devices. There's also an SR-250 ZigBee remote in the box, which offers full control through a television interface (HDMI and component outputs can be found on the HC-250's rear). You can also have full access through a variety of add-ons, including a $999 7-inch in-wall touchscreen with camera, a portable version for the same price, or any Android, iOS or Mac device -- access licenses for smartphones, tablets and computers run $199 each, or $499 to cover the entire home.

The Starter Kit can enable control of a single room, which may be fine for some users -- to add additional home theater setups you can bring on more HC-250s at $599 a pop. There's also an option to add ZigBee lighting controls ($129 per switch), ZigBee door locks ($150 to $350) or a door intercom unit with camera ($799). All-in, outfitting a large home can be quite pricey, and the Starter Kit is designed to get folks in the door, rather than to deliver a complete solution. We tested the controller with a TV, audio system, a pair of lights on two zones, the door intercom and a deadbolt, and all performed seamlessly without an hiccups. We also took a look at the intuitive drag-and-drop PC-based interface, which owners can use to change macros and add media. Introducing new components to the rig will require a dealer service call (or remote access, if you're just trying to loop in something like a NAS to serve up content). The Control4 Starter Kit is available through third-party dealers beginning today, including Magnolia Home Theater in select Best Buy stores (in that case, Geek Squad will handle the install). That sub-$1,000 figure factors in two hours of labor, and may climb a bit higher depending on dealer rates. Still, if you're just looking to get your feet wet, this seems to be a solid solution. Thumb through the gallery below for a closer look at the components and interface.

'Catching Fire': Wait, Is Romeo Joining The Cast?!

Romeo Miller tells MTV News he's already met with Lionsgate about possibly appearing in one of the 'Hunger Games' flicks.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Romeo Miller (formerly known as Lil' Romeo) has racked up an impressive number of credits in the decade or so that he's been acting. As the 22-year-old makes moves in his career as an adult actor, Romeo has his eyes set on one franchise in particular.

One of Miller's ideal projects would be a trip to Panem for "The Hunger Games," he told MTV News during a recent interview for "Madea's Witness Protection." In fact, he's already met with Lionsgate to discuss the possibility.

Although he got his start as the rap star son of Master P, Miller has been acting for years now. "A lot of people don't know I've been doing this for 10 years now," he said. "I felt that all of that was practice, leading up to the time now."

But for his next roles, Miller has his sights set on an acting career similar to Will Smith. "I want to be the next big action hero or I want to do a lot of romantic type movies, romantic comedies, a little bit of everything, but definitely the next action hero," Miller said, and then added, "You can see me in 'The Hunger Games' or something like that. Just throwing that out there."

Though he admitted to not being very familiar with Suzanne Collins' books, Miller confirmed that there has been some discussion about possibly joining "Catching Fire," which is currently casting.

"I actually just met with Lionsgate about that, so you may be seeing me in one of the 'Hunger Games.' That's all I'm saying," Miller said. "Not a particular role, we just had a meeting, seeing if it was something I was interested in. I can't really talk too much, or they'll kill you. You know how 'The Hunger Games' is."

Who should Romeo play in "Catching Fire"? Leave your comment below!

Lesley Brown dies; mother of first test-tube baby

When Lesley Brown's first child was born, there was no need to send out announcements. The news was blared on front pages around the world: "OUR MIRACLE," "BABY OF THE CENTURY," "IT'S A GIRL."

On July 25, 1978, Brown, a young woman from a working-class English town, gave birth to the first baby conceived outside the womb. Baby Louise Joy became a focus of international fascination as the first so-called test-tube baby, produced through in-vitro fertilization, a technique that raised moral and medical alarms 34 years ago but is commonplace today because of the more than 4 million women who have followed in Brown's steps.

Brown died June 6 in Bristol, England, after a short illness, British media reported after her funeral last week. She was 64.

She and her truck driver-husband, John, had struggled to conceive a baby for nine years until they met British biologist Robert G. Edwardsand Patrick Steptoe, a gynecologist. She had undergone a series of operations that failed to unblock her fallopian tubes, the cause of her inability to become pregnant. The 30-year-old woman was otherwise healthy, making her a good candidate for the experimental procedures the two men had been developing for years. They had produced one pregnancy before Brown's, but it was ectopic, meaning the fertilized egg developed outside the womb and could not survive.

With the aid of a thin viewing tube called a laparoscope, Steptoe and Edwards harvested one of Brown's eggs and fertilized it in the laboratory using her husband's sperm. They kept the fertilized egg alive in a glass dish containing a solution of special nutrients. Two-and-a-half days later they implanted it in Brown's uterus.

Her pregnancy proceeded normally ? until word got out that conception had been anything but normal. Reporters from as far away as Japan descended on the Browns' neighborhood and at their hospital in Oldham.

For the last month of her pregnancy, she took refuge in the hospital's maternity ward, trying to avoid the reporters and photographers who disguised themselves as janitors, boiler men and hospital administrators to snag a shot or interview with the first in-vitro mother-to-be.

News coverage was filled with purloined details about her diet, her dress, her emotional state. Medical experts were quoted warning about possible abnormalities in any child born of such unorthodox means. Ethicists invoked Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," theorizing about the potential for abuse or misuse of the controversial new technique. Religious leaders said in-vitro technology was not in God's plan.

For Brown, however, there was never any question that she would take Edwards' and Steptoe's help.

"When you've been through a lot of treatment over the years ? then any chance you get that someone's going to help you, you take it with both hands," she told the Associated Press years later.

Baby Louise was delivered a few weeks early by Caesarean section because Brown had developed toxemia, a disorder that can lead to stillbirth. The delivery proceeded uneventfully, ending with the most normal kind of drama: The 5 pound 12 ounce newborn "came out crying her head off ? a beautiful, normal baby," Steptoe told Time magazine, which heralded the event on its cover.

Four years later, in 1982, Brown made history again with the birth of her second child. Daughter Natalie was the world's 40th "test-tube" baby and Brown the first woman to have two children through the in-vitro method. In both instances, she became pregnant on her first try.

Brown's husband died in 2007. She is survived by her daughters and several grandchildren.

Edinburgh windows - Mistakes people make while opting for ...

If you are moving into a home that has been constructed decades ago in Edinburgh, you may want to consider replacing various aspects of the home to suit modern tastes. The most important aspects of the home that may need replacement are the doors and windows. Replacing Edinburgh windows is an exciting task, but needs a good amount of forethought to ensure you do not choose the wrong options. More often than not, people opt for window replacements without having the basic knowledge about the options they have in store for them today. Thus, they overlook the existence of uPVC windows Edinburgh and the ones made of aluminum though there are sturdier and long lasting as compared to their timber counterparts. If you want to choose the best windows for your home and avoid regrets, here are a few mistakes that you should avoid.

One of the most common mistakes people commit is, not knowing the various options available today. Gone are the days, when Edinburgh windows were only made using timber. With the passage of years, many materials such as aluminum, fiberglass, uPVC and even cloth are used to make windows. Of all these types available, it is the uPVC windows Edinburgh that enjoy a huge popularity because of the benefits that come along with it.

Another common mistake people make is not setting a realistic budget. When you undertake any renovation project, even if it is as simple as Edinburgh windows replacements, it is important to work with a budget in mind. More often than not, people hesitate to opt for window replacements even when it is needed since they assume it is an expensive affair that can set them back by a significant amount of money. On the contrary, there are options such as uPVC windows Edinburgh which are highly affordable and do not compromise on aspects such as reliability, security and strength.

Having a clear idea of what you need from the replacement Edinburgh windows you choose is also very important. One of the common mistakes that people make is that they make their choice based on the appearance as compared to features such as security and reliability. uPVC windows Edinburgh are options that not just enhance the aesthetics of the rooms, but also are weather proof and durable. Choosing these windows will ensure you get good value for money.

Not shopping extensively is another mistake that people make when they opt for Edinburgh windows replacements. A majority of customers end up walking into the retail stores in their neighborhood when they want to replace the windows of their homes. If you want to get the best windows at prices that are easy on your wallet, then looking out for the right online stores is the right idea. Going online will help you find a large number of stores in your region that offer the latest options such as uPVC windows Edinburgh at highly competitive prices. To get the best price, it is always recommended that you get quotes from multiple windows replacement service providers and choose the best one. However, it is important to ensure that you do not make your final choice based on the price factor alone.

Google feels the pain, lowers price for Google Maps API

It seems Google?s pockets have been itching as they start losing some of their bigger Maps partners. Apple has decided to create its own mapping service. Likewise, developers like Foursquare are not happy with the prices and finding greener pastures. With repercussions coming in fast, the Search Giant has decided to make things a bit more flexible for developers.

Developers have been paying $4 for every 1000 Map loads after a daily limit of free 25,000 hits. This price has been brought down to $0.50 per 1,000 third-party app map loads. In addition, Google is also relieving developers from ?styled maps? distinctions. Such developers would get a lower usage limit before these changes.

The vast majority of apps using the API will not exceed the 25,000 daily hits. In fact, Google states that only about 0.35% of them exceed said limits. But there is no doubt companies of the likes of Apple and Foursquare reach their limit very quickly.

It is hard to say if developers will start flocking back to Google?s wing. We know Apple won?t. But at least current users and upcoming developers will see this as a great incentive. Google IO is coming next week, and we will probably be hearing more about the improved 3D map features. Which by the way, look rather impressive.

We know Google will be working hard to improve its Map services, and with lower prices it hopes to keep as many partners as possible.

Hyperthyroidism linked to increased risk of hospitalization for heart and blood-vessel disease

Hyperthyroidism linked to increased risk of hospitalization for heart and blood-vessel disease [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 23-Jun-2012

An overactive thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism, may increase the risk of hospitalization for heart and blood-vessel disease even after surgery to remove the gland, according to a new study. The results will be presented Saturday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"Overactive thyroid gland has long-lasting effects on the patient's heart and vessels," said study principal investigator Saara Metso, M.D., Ph.D. assistant chief of endocrinology in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, at Tampere University Hospital in Tampere, Finland. "Therefore, it is important to monitor the patient's heartbeat and blood pressure even years after the overactive thyroid gland has been cured."

The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, produces thyroid hormone, which helps regulate the process of turning food into energy. When the gland is overactive and produces excessive hormone, many bodily processes speed up. Symptoms include unexplained weight loss, rapid heart rate, increased appetite, profuse sweating, and feelings of anxiety.

Diagnosis of an overactive thyroid gland usually involves a simple blood test, and effective treatments are available. These include radioactive iodine, which destroys part of the thyroid gland; antithyroid medication to reduce thyroid-hormone synthesis; and surgery, or a thyroidectomy, to remove it.

Recently, however, questions were raised about the long-term health effects of treatment after some studies found that patients who had received radioactive iodine treatment or antithyroid medication had an increased risk of hospitalization for heart and blood-vessel disease. This risk persisted long after therapy ended, but it was unclear whether it was associated with the treatment itself or the prior overactive thyroid.

In findings implicating the disease rather than the treatment, the current study showed that patients who had undergone surgical thyroid removal also were at greater risk of being hospitalized for heart and blood-vessel disease. Overall, their risk was 17 percent greater compared to those without a history of overactive thyroid, and the increased risk persisted for as long as two decades after surgery.

"Although overactive thyroid gland is usually easy to diagnose and treat, it may be injurious to the patient's heart and vessels," Metso said. "It is probably the disease rather than the treatment that affects the patient's heart and vessels permanently."

Participants included 4,334 patients diagnosed with overactive thyroid who underwent thyroidectomy in Finland between 1986 and 2007, and 12,991 age- and gender-matched controls. They were 86 percent female, their average age was 46 years, and all were white. Average follow-up was 10.5 years.

Investigators obtained hospitalization information from Finland's national Hospital Discharge Registry for the study. They received funding from Research Funding of the Pirkanmaa Hospital District, Finland.

Hyperthyroidism affects approximately 1 percent of the U.S. population. The most common cause is an autoimmune disorder called Grave's disease.

Negative radiation pressure in light could make some tractor beams real, we're already sucked in

Developing a real, working tractor beam has regularly been an exercise in frustration: it often relies on brute force attempts to induce a magnetic link or an air pressure gap, either of which falls a bit short of science fiction-level elegance. The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology's Mordechai Segev has a theory that would use the subtler (though not entirely movie-like) concept of negative radiation pressure in light to move objects. By using materials that have a negative refraction index, where the light photons and their overall wave shape move in opposite directions, Segev wants to create a sweet spot where negative radiation pressure exists and an object caught in the middle can be pushed around. His early approach would use extremely thin crystals stacked in layers to manipulate the refraction. As it's theorized, the technology won't be pulling in the Millennium Falcon anytime soon -- the millimeters-wide layer intervals dictate the size of what can be pulled. Nonetheless, even the surgery-level tractor beams that Segev hopes will ultimately stem from upcoming tests would bring us much closer to the future that we've always wanted.

CSN: Samardzija Cubs' building block

June 21, 2012, 8:12 pm

Theo Epstein?s first impression of Jeff Samardzija: Man on a mission.

The Cubs will be putting Samardzija front and center as they contemplate life after Ryan Dempster, figure out what to do with Matt Garza and go to the next phase of their rebuilding project at Clark and Addison.

The Cubs are back in Arizona, which Samardzija found to be the perfect distraction-free zone last offseason. He moved back into his place near the team?s complex in Mesa, to do all the things he outlined for Epstein when he made his pitch to be in the rotation.

When Samardzija takes the ball Friday night against the Diamondbacks, he will have accounted for 78 innings, or 10 less than he threw last season out of the bullpen. This is what he wanted all along, why he went out to the desert.

?I actually kind of feel stronger than I did in the beginning, to tell you the truth,? Samardzija said. ?I really feel like I?m hitting that midseason point where the arm really starts coming along, and all that work you?ve done in the offseason starts really kicking in right about now.?

Samardzija is 5-5 with a 4.04 ERA and 78 strikeouts against 28 walks. Epstein believes the art will be in finding the consistency, because Samardzija is so athletically gifted.

?As advertised,? Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. ?Great arm.?

Samardzija is 27, while Garza is 28, and together they are two big personalities who could front a rotation with ideas about October.

Garza says he?d only be worried if his name wasn?t in trade rumors, that Chicago would be a great place for his kids to grow up, but ultimately ?I?ll pitch on the freaking moon.?

Garza won?t be a free agent until after the 2013 season. His main point is that it?s out of his control. But couldn?t he go to the Cubs and try to make a commitment?

?The conversations of that nature between the player and the club are always best kept confidential,? Epstein said. ?We?ve had an ongoing dialogue about a number of things. We have an open-door policy with any of our players about anything, on the field or off the field, business or personal.?

Last offseason, Samardzija got an audience with the front office at a time when several other now ex-Cubs say they got nothing but silence.

The new regime change meant a lot to Samardzija, which is ironic, because the University of Notre Dame football star had become a signature signing/lightning rod for the Jim Hendry administration.

It wasn?t hard to interpret Samardzija?s state of mind in spring training, when he cut off a reporter wondering what if the rotation thing doesn?t work out: ?The worst question I?ve ever heard.?

And Samardzija turned around another question from a Boston writer who had traveled to Arizona to work on an Epstein profile, saying he wasn?t a big East Coast fan, that he was a big Hendry guy and the new bosses would have big shoes to fill.

?The biggest thing that helped us was the makeup,? said assistant general manager Randy Bush. ?As he struggled to figure it out at the major-league level, the one thing that we knew was how tough he is, and how competitive he is, and I think that has helped him transition into what he?s becoming.?

Bush has watched Samardzija since Notre Dame, where his former University of New Orleans teammate, Paul Mainieri, used to be the baseball coach before moving on to Louisiana State University.

Bush, who was hired by Hendry, speaks with authority, because he has institutional memory and played on two World Series winners with the Minnesota Twins, an organization known for player development.

?(Samardzija?s) not going to make the same mistakes over and over again,? Bush said. ?He?s just going to learn. Physically, he?s got everything you look for to be that kind of guy you can hopefully tee up there for 200 innings a year.?

Everyone talked about the 85 mph splitter that got away from Samardzija and smashed into Paul Konerko?s face last month at Wrigley Field. But the day after, Bush spoke with Samardzija about the previous at-bat, the 95 mph, 1-0 fastball he left middle in for Konerko, which was crushed for a two-run homer that helped lift the White Sox.

?I think a lot of the struggles (Jeff) went through the last few years was (just because) he?s still young as a pitcher,? Bush said. ?I remember shaking my head thinking: Why would you try to beat Konerko in there? The risk-reward just isn?t there. And I (told him) those kind of things, you?re just going to learn.?

Samardzija was strong enough to play Sundays in the NFL, and the thought is that he will pitch somewhere around 180 innings this season, though there?s not a hard limit.

Or, as manager Dale Sveum said: ?We?re not going to kill him, put it that way.? So there?s going to be another interesting conversation.

?I understand that they have a plan with me, (which) is fine,? Samardzija said. ?I would like to pitch every fifth day, no matter what. I think I can physically do it and I handle it, but it?s not my call. So I?m going to pitch when they tell me to pitch, and when I go out there, I?m going to give it everything I have and lay it all out there.?

Your Daily Cup of Coffee is Good for You ? Food of Life

Foto: sxc.hu

A moderate consumption of coffee can be preventive against type 2-diabetes and certain forms of cancer. That is the conclusion in a new report from the Danish ?Vidensr?d for forebyggelse? (Council of Prevention).
?
In the new report it is stated that most scientific studies so far have concluded that a moderate consumption of coffee is preventative against a number of diseases. One of our professors, Lars Ove Dragsted is one of the co-authors and he has told us a bit about the conclusions of the report:

?The Danes have for a long time been one of the most coffee-consuming nations in the world and now we can show that it isn?t a bad thing and in reality coffee-consumption has a lot of beneficial effects? says Professor Lars Ove Dragsted, who in his own research works with bioactive and preventative diet-components.

The report was written because of all the myths relating to coffee-consumption, which is also the reason for focusing on coffee?s impact on health and diseases. The report is a review of the existing literature on the topic, written in an easily understandable style, giving Danes (or people who speak Danish) a chance to learn about the scientific research done in the area.

It?s okay to drink coffee even if you?re pregnant

Many moms-to-be have probably had to hear that coffee-drinking is bad/dangerous to the foetus and in some countries (like the US) pregnant women have been advised against drinking coffee during pregnancy. It has been suspected that the caffeine in coffee could hurt the foetus and perhaps cause a miscarriage.

The report shows that a consumption of no more than 2-3 cups a day (<300 mg caffeine a day) has no harmful effect on women?s ability to get pregnant or to the foetus. It is however still unclear whether a higher intake of coffee can have a harmful effect. So to be safe; don?t drink more than 2-3 cups of coffee a day (and I don?t mean Starbucks grande latte!) if you are pregnant or planning to be soon.

Coffee lowers the risk for type 2-diabetes and some forms of cancer

If you are not pregnant or planning to be a coffee-intake around 3-4 cups a day can actually lower your risk of developing type 2-diabetes. The report shows that it will decrease your risk with 25 % or more.

?The Danes average coffee-consumption of around 3-4 cups a day provides a protective effect in regards to the development of type 2-diabetes. At the same time an increased intake of coffee actually gives you increased protection even if you drink up to 6-8 cups a day? says Professor Lars Ove Dragsted and continues:

?New studies also show that coffee can reduce the risk for some types of cancer, like liver, oral cavity, rectum and colon cancer. In regards to cardiovascular diseases filtered coffee seems to be able to reduce the risk about 10 %. This protection is however only present when drinking filtered coffee and not if you use a French press or drink espresso?.

Now this report gives you the perfect excuse next time you crave a coffee. So enjoy it, but don?t drink too much. If you can read Danish there are more articles on our page and also the full report for download.

I've fallen off the wagon, and I can't get back on! ? fitdesiree

I worked my butt off knowing that I had this photo shoot coming up!

Check out my website www.fitdesiree.com!

There is nothing harder than starting a new fitness and nutrition regimen?other than restarting a fitness and nutrition regimen.? The healthy-lifestyle wagon constantly has people jumping on and falling off.? And believe me, it can happen to the best of us.? So what can you do when you fall off the wagon and can?t manage to jump back on?? Well, instead of wallowing in your sedentary, junk food bloat, here are some positive steps you can take to get yourself back on the wagon.

First, it helps if you have something to work towards.? In most cases, people are more apt to stick to a fitness and nutrition regimen if there is an end goal.? A competition, an audition, a photo shoot, a friend?s wedding, your wedding, a class reunion, a doctor?s appointment, vacation, wearing a bathing suit in public, going to the gym for the first time, or any other event in the near future.? I am stressing ?near future,? so that the end is in sight.? This way you will be less likely to fall of the wagon before your final destination.? A good way to ensure your loyalty to an exercise and nutrition program is to hang up something symbolic of your goal, in a very conspicuous location.? That symbol can be the bikini or speedo (for you men out there) you want to wear to the beach, or a dress you plan on wearing for a big event, or maybe even a hip little tennis outfit for your tennis league.? Those are just a few ideas to help keep you focused!

If I was feeling lazy, I tried on these shorts to get me motivated for my shoot!

Second, set realistic fitness and nutrition goals to get you to your big event.? If you have insane will power and self control, then more power to you.? Do a 180 and tackle your exercise and diet renovations head on.? If you?re like a majority of the population, you?ll need to start small and work your way towards health guru status.? Here are some nutrition goals you should try to work your way up to:

 • Eat breakfast every day within 30 minutes of waking.
 • Eat every 3 hours.
 • Eat lots and lots of veggies and a moderate amount of fruits.
 • Choose whole grains over refined grains.
 • Choose low fat and fat free dairy products over full fat dairy products.
 • Choose leans meats, fish, legumes, and nuts/seeds as your protein sources.
 • Limit fried and high fat foods.
 • Try to get 30-60 minutes of cardio exercise 5-7 days a week.
 • Try to get 30-60 minutes of strength training 3-5 days a week.

Before you have a nervous break down from reading this list, remember to start small.? Think of each point on the list as a body part that you?ve managed to hoist back onto the healthy wagon.? If you?re not doing any of the things on this list, then you?re nowhere near the wagon.? So start with one thing to get a hold of the wagon, even if the wagon has to drag you along, then add one more thing every week until you?re completely back on the wagon, sitting in the drivers seat.

Third, make sure that you?re hopping back on the wagon for you.? Many people jump back into health and fitness regimens for all the wrong reasons, and two of the worst reasons are to get revenge on someone, or make someone jealous.? WORST IDEAS EVER!? Get healthy for you, not for your ex, or the captain of the cheerleading squad that was mean to you in high school, or your dance teacher that said you were fat, or your bridezilla friend who thinks that bridesmaid dress looks bad on you because you?re fat?not because the dress itself is hideous.? There are so many positive effects of exercise and a healthy diet, that it would be silly to allow your driving factor to be something negative, i.e. that negative Nelly.

I know Jen isn?t really motivated by revenge (since she?s always in great shape), but don?t let revenge or jealousy drive you!

Finally, go easy on yourself.? If you slip a little, don?t beat yourself up.? We?re human, we make mistakes; it?s what we do best.? You might miss a workout, or slip and fall on a chocolate chip cookie that happens to land in your mouth.? Oh well.? Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move on.? No sense in dwelling on the past when you?re trying to move forward!
