Casey Anthony defense tries to counter prosecution (AP)

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Defense attorneys called an FBI expert on hair and fiber to the stand Thursday as they continued trying to poke holes in the prosecution's case against Casey Anthony, who is charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter.

Stephen Shaw, who had testified earlier for the state, took the witness stand on the 26th day of Anthony's trial.

The body of Anthony's daughter, Caylee, was found in December 2008, almost six months after she disappeared in Orlando. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty. She faces the death penalty if convicted.

Shaw was the latest forensics expert called by the defense. On Wednesday, forensic chemist Michael Sigman testified that he had collected and tested air samples from the trunk of Casey Anthony's car in July 2008. He said that based on his analysis he couldn't say for sure there was a body inside of it, as prosecutors contend.

Sigman was one of five forensic witnesses who testified Wednesday as defense attorneys challenged prosecutors' contentions that Caylee Anthony was suffocated with duct tape and left in her mother's trunk.

Separately, an attorney for Casey Anthony's parents on Thursday sought to clarify statements to a CNN reporter in which he implied George and Cindy Anthony no longer think their daughter is innocent.

Attorney Mark Lippman said in a statement that he wanted to "clear any misunderstanding" that came from his conversation with CNN reporter Gary Tuchman, but the statement didn't deny the claim in Tuchman's report Wednesday evening.

Lippman's statement said Cindy and George Anthony "simply want justice in this case."

Keith Olbermann's case for gay marriage

Olbermann's special comment on gay marriage

President Obama may not have made a firm commitment to marriage equality in his speech to a New York City fundraiser Thursday night -- but on his new Current TV show, Keith Olbermann certainly did. Here's an excerpt from Olbermann's "special comment:"

[Gay marriage] won't destroy the democracy; it doesn't destroy the family; it strengthens the institution of marriage and its principal premise of fidelity; and it increases the number of people living in stable and loving homes. ... This is, corny as it seems, not about politics or religion or power or lobbying. It is about love. In a time of impermanence and fly-by-night relationships these people over here want the same chance at permanence and happiness that is already yours. They don?t want to deny you yours. They don?t want to take anything away from you. They want what you want: a chance to be a little less alone in the world. And your acceptance of their love turns out to be your own expression of love to your fellow human beings.

New York lawmakers to vote on gay marriage within hours (Reuters)

ALBANY, New York (Reuters) ? New York state senators will vote on whether to become the sixth U.S. state to allow gay marriage later on Friday or in the early hours of Saturday, Republican senators said.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Republican Senator George Maziarz both said a marriage equality bill would be voted on by the Senate.

New York could become the sixth and most populous state to allow gay marriage if bill introduced by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo is approved by the Senate. Only one more Republican senator needs to support the bill for it to pass.

Passage would be a key gay rights victory and boost the national profile of the cause ahead of 2012 presidential and congressional elections.

The fate of the proposal hinges on three undecided Republican senators who have voiced concerns over what they say are weak legal protections for religious groups and individuals who oppose gay marriage.

While only one Senate Republican vote is needed, most observers say at least two or three additional votes are necessary to provide political cover, as same-sex marriage is a sensitive issue for conservative politicians.

On Thursday Sen. Greg Ball, a Hudson Valley Republican, announced that he would vote against the marriage bill after weeks of being considered a key swing vote. He said the bill did not provide sufficient religious protections.

Ball's announcement left only three undecided senators.

"We still very much feel the momentum," said Ross Levi, head of gay-rights group Empire State Pride Agenda, citing recent polls that showed public support for gay marriage in New York as high as 58 percent.

In his most recent public comments, Cuomo on Wednesday night told reporters he remained "cautiously optimistic" the bill would pass.

Why I love conservative legal minds ? Sister Toldjah

Because they so expertly and soundly destroy liberal ?legal? tripe like this on a routine basis.?

The excellent legal fisking was done by Aaron Worthing, who has been guestblogging at Patterico?s for a few months.? Make sure to bookmark the blog to read him daily, and if you?re a Twitter fan, here?s his page.??

If Time Magazine had any cojones whatsoever?they?d post?Worthing?s counter to their Managing Editor?s dreadfully ignorant column on the Constitution, but it?s understandable that they don?t because Worthing?s takedown makes it crystal clear that, in?the future,?Stengel ought to confine his superficial, half-baked legal theories to the DC/NYC/Beltway cocktail circuit, where?unquestioning self-important liberals and ?respectable Republicans? who are standing around listening him can mindlessly nod in awestruck approval ? because, as so often demonstrated on the pages of mainstream media publications like the New York Times,?they don?t know any better, either.

I?ll be writing more posts like this one in the future.? My personal and professional time has been heavily occupied the last several months, so you?ve seen a little less of me here at the blog.? Parenting with your Ex post-divorce :: How to Successfully Co ...

By brianjames on June 22nd, 2011

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry tells us children of divorce do best when both of their parents continue to be actively involved in their lives. It?s the ongoing connection that makes the positive difference for these children, minimizing the fact that their parents no longer live together.

That?s why co-parenting is universally encouraged as a significant way to reduce the long-term emotional impact on children. Co-parenting styles and arrangements can differ widely. Professionals agree that co-parenting will only succeed if some basic agreements are made and significant mistakes are avoided. Here are some good rules to follow:

1. Don?t deny your child personal time with both of their parents.

If you want your child to weather the challenges that come with divorce and disruption of the family dynamic, allow him/her as much time as possible with both you and your ex. Your child will thank you, have fewer behavioral problems, and grow up happier and emotionally healthier when you honor their love for both of their parents.

2. Don?t argue or have tantrums around your child.

If you have issues, gripes or reason for angry words with your co-parent, plan a private time alone, far from your child?s eyes and ears, for those conversations. The consequences when you do otherwise will be significant and long-lasting.

3. Don?t make your child your confidant ? or friend!

You rob your kids of their childhood when you confide or share your feelings about your ex with them ? especially when you?re trying to influence them in your direction. Need to rant and vent about your ex? Do it with a friend ? or better yet, a professional.

4. Don?t make your child the messenger.

When you have issues to discuss, discuss them directly, not through your children. Not only can the kids mess up the messages, they can also intentionally change the messages due to guilt, anxiety, fear, resentment and other emotions related to protecting one or both parents. This is a big no-no that can lead to no good.

5. Don?t think like a sole parent; you?re part of a parenting team.

When you were married you were one of two parents. You still are. When parenting issues come up, ask yourself what would I do as a parent if I weren?t divorced? If that still makes sense, respond accordingly. Parents who continue parenting as a team create an easier transition and better post-divorce adjustments for their child.

6. Don?t be rigid ? flexibility is fruitful.

Every time you bend, go with the flow, compromise and cooperate with your co-parent you model the kind of behaviors that benefit both of you in the long-term. Flexibility reduces defensiveness and builds bridges toward better parenting solutions.

Remember, every time you forgive and indulge irritating behavior without creating an issue, you are doing it to make life easier for your child.

7. Don?t exclude the other parent whenever you have a choice.

Even when you are the primary residential parent that doesn?t mean your ex can?t be included in special occasion celebrations, school activities, sports and other events in your child?s life. Think about how pleased your child will be having both Mom and Dad on hand to enjoy significant moments in their life. When it makes sense for both parents to be together on behalf of your child, be cordial and mature. This lifts an enormous weight off your child?s shoulders. They?ll thank you when they are grown.

Sometimes it helps to think about co-parenting as a business relationship that has to work. You make accommodations on behalf of your partner for the higher cause of business success. This can be a valuable perspective for co-parents after divorce. When you put all your efforts into making it work, your children reap the rewards. Isn?t that a bottom line result worth your commitment and attention?

Bellfield guilty of Milly murder

Levi BellfieldLevi Bellfield had denied murdering schoolgirl Milly Dowler who vanished from Surrey in 2002

Former nightclub doorman Levi Bellfield has been found guilty of murdering 13-year-old Milly Dowler.

Milly vanished in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, as she walked home from school on 21 March 2002. Her remains were found in Hampshire six months later.

An Old Bailey jury found Bellfield, 43, guilty of abducting and murdering her after she walked past his home.

In 2008 he was convicted of murdering two young women in west London and attempting to murder a third.

Bellfield was also accused of attempting to abduct 11-year-old Rachel Cowles the day before in March 2002.

No verdict has been reached on that charge.

Milly Dowler was last seen near Bellfield's flat in Collingwood Place, off Station Avenue.

Police knocked on his door on 11 occasions, the last of which was on 28 May 2004, but officers never tried to contact the letting agent in an effort to trace him.

Rachel Cowles' mother Diana rang police when a man in a red car offered her daughter a lift but it was three years before officers interviewed her.

Milly's mother and her sister Gemma, 25, collapsed after hearing the verdict.

They had each broken down in the witness box after it was suggested that Milly had run away or committed suicide because she was unhappy.

At one stage Milly's father became a suspect after it emerged he had an interest in bondage sex.

During his trial, Bellfield refused to give evidence in his defence.

His red Daewoo Nexi car, which was seen turning into Station Road 22 minutes after Milly was last seen, has never been found.

Dutch parliament voting on mobile 'net neutrality' (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? The Dutch parliament appears set to approve a bill Tuesday that would force mobile Internet providers to let their customers use Skype and other third-party services on their networks without charging extra or giving preferential treatment to their own offerings.

If passed and approved by the senate, it would set an example in Europe as the strongest "net neutrality" law on record.

Telecommunications companies generally oppose the move, saying it may make it impossible to offer quality guarantees, and they won't expand their networks if they can't profit from them.

But advocates say the bill will spur innovation. It is endorsed by consumer advocates and is seen as benefiting major software companies, notably Facebook, Skype owner Microsoft, and Google.

Apple Stock to Rise 52%, Morningstar Forecasts

BOSTON (TheStreet) -- Morningstar(MORN), the safety-first investment-research firm, added tech darling Apple(AAPL) to its exclusive five-star stock list.

Chicago-based Morningstar covers more than 1,700 stocks and only 45 receive five-star rankings. That number has increased, quite a bit, in the past few weeks as the equity market has slid. Morningstar says Apple -- which is down to $315 from a 52-week high of $365 -- is now at a discount price. During the second quarter, Apple roughly doubled its operating income and boosted sales 83%. Such growth is remarkable, especially considering the company already has a market value of $290 billion. IPhone revenue surged 126%, Mac revenue climbed 32%, iTunes revenue increased 23%, software sales stretched 17% and peripherals sales advanced 23%. iPod sales declined 14%. The iPad, Apple's latest disruptive-technology product, has no year-over-year comparison, but it delivered $2.3 billion of quarterly sales. Put simply, business is booming. Commentators spouting off about the beleaguered American consumer as a should take a gander at Apple. Its recent move to sell the iPhone through Verizon(VZ) is providing a nice tailwind as its release of the iPad 2, which is cannibalizing PC sales from the likes of Hewlett-Packard(HPQ). The one unit receiving little attention, despite outstanding growth, is the Mac business, which is stealing market share at a steady clip. Two other positives: Apple's stock is extremely cheap, on a peer and historical basis, and it carries nearly $66 billion of net cash (cash minus debt). Morningstar's thesis is straightforward: Apple is a safe, cheap growth stock, likely to outperform. Apple has a fair-value target of $475, suggesting a return of 52%. Unlike the sell-side, Morningstar doesn't link its targets to a specific time frame. Piper Jaffray(PJC) forecasts a 12-month advance to $554 and Credit Suisse(CS) predicts a rise to $500. Apple receives positive reviews, comprising "buy," "outperform" and "overweight" rankings, from a disproportionate 91% of researchers in coverage. That share renders the stock the fourth-highest-rated in the benchmark S&P 500 Index. With an operating margin, at 29%, in the 99th industry percentile, it's no wonder why Apple is analysts' favorite tech stock. A trailing P/E of 15 is 39% below the five-year average. Morningstar says Apple has a "widening economic moat." Economic moat, or sustainable competitive advantage, is the key to Morningstar's rating system. The researcher favors companies that can keep competitors at bay. Still, Morningstar may be underestimating just how wide Apple's moat is. Although, in theory, other hardware companies could build a better iPhone, so to speak, Apple's customer base is, arguably, the most loyal in the world, and its record of manufacturing seamless, user-friendly and innovative products has garnered goodwill. Research In Motion(RIMM), maker of the business-friendly BlackBerry, has learned how tough it is to square off with a consumer darling.

Obesity Surgery Yields Clues to Weight-Loss Mysteries (LiveScience.com)

Surgery for obesity began with a simple premise: if you make the stomach smaller, people will eat less, so they will lose weight.

But in recent years the results of obesity surgery have been so outstanding, researchers went back to the drawing boards to figure out what was going on.

Their findings are beginning to present a far more complicated picture of weight ? and of how much diet and exercise can really do to change it. Turns out, a slew of hormones from the gut, and their communication with the brain, play a role in the way the body maintains and loses weight.

Chasing down the answer to exactly how obesity surgery works is providing new insights into human weight loss and appetite regulation, researchers say.

"As a result of weight loss surgery, we finally are beginning to understand the physiology of weight loss better than we've ever understood it before," said Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul, a weight-loss surgeon at Olde Del Mar Surgical in La Jolla, Calif.

Their investigations may reveal how to replicate the results of the surgery without requiring patients to go under the knife.

Ghrelin from the gut

There are several different types of weight-loss surgery (also called bariatric surgery), including gastric bypass and gastric banding, but all involve making the stomach smaller. [Infographic: Types of Weight Loss Surgery].

Patients can lose up to 60 to 80 percent of their excess weight in one to four years after surgery, and many have an easier time keeping it off than they did through dieting, Bhoyrul said. However, up to a third can end up back at their pre-surgical weight seven to 10 years later, he noted.

But researchers are realizing that weight loss after surgery is fundamentally different from weight loss achieved by dieting.

A key player in this difference is the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates appetite. When we diet, our ghrelin levels rise, making us hungry. We may lose weight, but our ghrelin levels stay high, and we continue to feel hungry even after eating. Ghrelin levels come down only if we regain the weight, said Dr. Robin Blackstone, a bariatric surgeon at Scottsdale Bariatric Center in Arizona.

"People who are trying to lose weight are being fought tooth and nail by the body to keep that weight on," said Dr. Miguel Burch, associate director of general surgery and minimally invasive surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

But after gastric bypass surgery, ghrelin levels go down significantly, Burch said.

"They're losing more weight than they ever had before and not only are not hungry, they have to force themselves to eat," Burch said. This may be why surgery patients can keep their weight off, he said.

And ghrelin is likely just the tip of the iceberg in terms of hormonal changes that occur. There are likely many more hormones we don't know about that aid in weight loss after surgery, Burch said.

Mind over stomach

Results from the surgery have also highlighted the role of the brain in weight loss and weight gain. Your mind, not just your stomach, manages your waistline.

"We never realized that the brain was so important," Bhoyrul said. "We thought it was just as simple as getting people to eat less. That turns out to be the least of the issues," he said.

The brain is the body's energy thermostat, Bhoyrul said, controlling how quickly you use energy, and when to store and expend it. There is an ongoing conversation between the gut and the brain that takes place via hormones, he said.

Deciphering this conversation could help researchers understand how to best instigate weight loss, Bhoyrul said.

A recent finding underscores how much there is to learn about the stomach-brain connection. Unlike the drop in ghrelin seen after gastric bypass, those who undergo gastric banding experience a drop in their hunger, but not in ghrelin, said Dr. Emma Patterson, a bariatric surgeon in Portland, Ore. This may be because ghrelin communicates with the brain differently after this surgery, Patterson said.

Surgery without the surgery

It might be possible to replicate the results of the surgery using drugs.

"If we can understand how these surgeries work?we can put whatever that thing is in a pill," Patterson said.

One possible target may be an enzyme involved in the production of ghrelin, Burch said.

Indeed, one approach taken by researchers seeking to develop an obesity vaccine has been to block the hormone's production.

However, some have argued that, because many hormones are involved in weight loss, targeting one is unlikely to help people lose weight.

"Most of us are skeptical that 'turning off the ghrelin switch' is the universal answer to all obesity," Bhoyrul said.

Pass it on: The success of obesity surgery is yielding a better understanding of how gut hormones and the brain regulate weight and controls appetite.

Cheryl Saban Ph.D.: Living Life as a Refugee

June 20th is the date that many countries have assigned to recognize Refugees -- to honor their courage, to bring awareness to their difficulties, to shine a light on their sorrow. This date has become particularly well-known in Africa, and is known as "Africa Refugee Day," but I'm sure there are several other important dates and observances meant to bring attention to this cause as well -- and there should be. This isn't a situation anyone asks for -- "No one wants to become a Refugee," as Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon has poignantly stated.

When I first began to write this piece, I started in my usual way. I was going to address the subject from a woman's advocate perspective. From that point of view, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned. Refugees are at risk. It is known that they face murder, rape and terror. And if not these horrible options, these individuals face uncertainty, fear and illiteracy. But before I could finish writing my piece, I received a letter from a friend, who works with refugees. I thought it would be much more powerful for you to read something firsthand from a young woman who has experienced the hardships of life as a Refugee.

And so, hereunder is a letter from Grace.

"My name is Grace Freeman and I'm 21 years old. Today is World Refugee Day - and it's the first one in my life I will not spend as a refugee.
When I was 8 months old, my family fled the civil war in Liberia. We made our way to the country of Ghana, where we lived in the sprawling camp of Buduburam Refugee Settlement with 40,000 other refugees.
Life in the camp was hard. We slept on the ground when we first arrived, drinking water from mud puddles. There were snakes and many other dangers. As the time passed, we got tents and then were able to build small houses but life wasn't much easier. Our father left. Our mother tried to find food for us. I always begged my mom to let me go to school but it wasn't free and we couldn't pay. Finally my mother gave me to an important "big woman" in the camp, who promised to send me to the camp school.
At the age of 7, I left my family's small tin house and moved in with the important lady. She had been rich back in Liberia. Her larger tin house sheltered her many children and grandchildren. I was happy to finally get a chance to learn. But my dream quickly became dark.
Instead of sending me to school, she made me her servant. The words for this in my culture are "outside child". I was beaten and made to work long hours caring for her family. I learned to make fires, fetch water, scrub clothes, carry large cookpots full of hot food to sell on the road to make money for the woman, who forced me to call her "Mommy." I wore the same two dresses for years. I would sleep in both of them to stay warm, on the floor of the house. I was not allowed to be called Grace, only Dog. She told me I was a "born slave."
I was allowed to see my real mother sometimes but if I ever complained to her, I knew she would go to the important lady to complain and then I would get a beating. I knew my mother could not feed me, even if I came home. And sometimes the woman would let me go to school for a few hours, which I wanted more than anything. Usually though, she made me stay home or go work on the road.
One day, I had a chance for freedom and I took it. I gathered my courage and finally ran to someone to help me. By then, my mother had passed away and I was 18 years old. For the first time in my life, I spoke out and told the world, "No, I will not be a slave. I am not an outside child. I am Grace."
I tell you this for one reason today: to ask that when you think about refugees and the lives they are forced into, please remember what put them there. Before being a slave, before losing my mother - my troubles began with war. Most refugee troubles begin with anger and guns and scared people running. If we are talking of helping refugees, let us first talk of helping to keep people from BECOMING refugees.
Somewhere today there is a girl who has a home in a troubled land. Maybe war will come there, maybe not. Maybe she will lose her home and her mother and all she knows. But maybe - if we focus on finding peace and removing guns from the hands of people who destroy life - maybe she will live in her home, with her own mother, for as long as she wants. It's up to us.
My name is Grace. I am not a refugee. But I speak for those who might one day be."

Grace Freeman is 21 years old and a Fellow of Strongheart Fellowship, a healing & learning program for exceptional young people from extreme circumstances. www.unhcr.org World Refugee Day. Don't forget.

Pfizer, Acura say FDA clears new painkiller Oxecta ? Health ...

?

?

NEW YORK ? Pfizer Inc. and Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday the Food and Drug Administration approved a powerful painkiller that is designed to be harder to abuse.

The FDA cleared marketing of Oxecta as an immediate-release treatment for moderate to severe pain. The drug is designed to discourage common methods of abuse like crushing or dissolving, and it contains a compound that irritates the nose if it is snorted.

Shares of Acura, based in Palatine, Ill., rose 78 cents, or 20.2 percent, to $4.65 in afternoon trading. Earlier in the day its shares surged as much as 75.7 percent. Pfizer stock was unchanged at $20.26.

Oxecta is similar to Purdue Pharma LP?s OxyContin, the top-selling painkiller in the U.S. Regulators and health officials have pushed hard to get alternatives on the market after reports showed millions of people were abusing OxyContin and other prescription painkillers.

Acura and King Pharmaceuticals developed Oxecta under the name Acurox. Pfizer of New York bought King for $3.6 billion, and Oxecta is the first of King?s drugs to be approved since the deal closed in March. A second approval could come Thursday, as Pfizer is waiting for the FDA to return a decision on the drug candidate Remoxy.

OxyContin is an extended-release painkiller, however, and Citi Investment Research analyst John Boris said those drugs represent a larger market. Boris said annual sales of Oxecta could rise as high as $100 million, but Remoxy sales could reach $500 million a year.

Unlike those drugs, Oxecta is designed to start working right away.

Boris said he does not believe Remoxy will be approved this week, as Pfizer has disclosed a manufacturing issue that could delay approval. Remoxy was developed by Durect Corp. and licensed by Pain Therapeutics Inc. Pfizer now holds a sublicense from Pain Therapeutics.

Police arrest Essex teen over Lulz hacking attacks (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? British police working with the FBI have arrested a 19-year-old man over attacks by the Lulz Security hacking group on the websites of the CIA, US Senate, Sony and others, Scotland Yard said on Tuesday.

The man was arrested on Monday night at a house in Wickford in Essex, over allegations of fraud and computer misuse. He is being questioned at a London police station, it said in a statement.

A police source confirmed to AFP: "Yes, the arrest is in connection with the Lulz Security attacks. We believe this to be a significant arrrest."

The hacker group known as Lulz Security has claimed responsibility for a month-long rampage on targets that also include Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency, which was attacked on Monday.

The Scotland Yard statement said: "Officers from the Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit have arrested a 19-year-old man in a pre-planned intelligence-led operation.

"The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of international businesses and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group."

Under a DDoS attack, a website is overwhelmed with traffic and becomes sluggish or unresponsive.

"Searches at a residential address in Wickford, Essex, following the arrest last night have led to the examination of a significant amount of material. These forensic examinations remain ongoing," the statement said.

Scotland Yard said British police have been "working in cooperation with the FBI" in the run-up to the arrest.

There have been no postings since early Tuesday on a Twitter account purportedly operated by Lulz.

Lulz knocked out the CIA's public website, cia.gov, for about two hours last week using a DDoS attack and also hacked into the US Senate's public website.

The group has also released tens of thousands of user names and passwords stolen from Sony and other sites.

In an online manifesto posted last week, Lulz -- whose name is a derivative of the text shorthand for LOL, or "laugh out loud" -- said they were staging the attacks for their own entertainment.

"You find it funny to watch havoc unfold, and we find it funny to cause it," it said.

"For the past month and a bit, we've been causing mayhem and chaos throughout the Internet, attacking several targets including PBS, Sony, Fox, porn websites, FBI, CIA, the US government, Sony some more, online gaming servers," Lulz said.

Casey Anthony trial: Witness refutes duct tape as murder weapon

A top forensic pathologist said Saturday in the Casey Anthony trial that Caylee, 2, was already dead when duct tape was affixed to her face. Prosecutors say the tape was the murder weapon.

A world-renowned forensic pathologist testified on Saturday at the Casey Anthony murder trial that duct tape found near the remains of Ms. Anthony?s 2-year-old daughter were not affixed to her face until after the child was already dead.

?I think the duct tape was a later event, not an early event,? Dr. Werner Spitz told the jury. He added that it was introduced ?after decomposition.?

The testimony is significant because it is in direct opposition to the prosecution?s theory that Casey Anthony killed her daughter, Caylee, by smothering her with pieces of duct tape pressed firmly over the toddler?s nose and mouth.

It also clashes with the findings of Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia, who ruled Caylee?s death a homicide and concluded that the duct tape had been affixed to her face before her death.

His testimony came on Day 22 of Anthony?s trial in an Orlando, Fla., courtroom. She is charged with first-degree murder and faces a death sentence if convicted.

Dr. Spitz has been involved in some of the country?s highest-profile death investigations, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

Spitz said he concluded that the duct tape was applied after decomposition because investigators found no DNA evidence such as pieces of skin on what had been the sticky side of the tape. He said skin would be expected if the tape was pressed firmly into a living person?s face.

?It is my opinion that the duct tape was stuck on there after the skin deteriorated, after the skin decomposed,? he said during cross-examination.

?How did this person put duct tape on the skull,? asked prosecutor Jeffrey Ashton in a disbelieving and dismissive tone of voice.

Spitz responded with his own sarcasm. ?They took a piece of duct tape in a roll ? it comes in a roll ? and tore off a number of sections, maybe this long, and stuck them on the skull,? Spitz said. He said it may have been done to hold the lower jaw in place and to keep the skull intact.

Spitz also accused the medical examiner in the Anthony case, Dr. Garavaglia, of conducting a ?shoddy autopsy? on Caylee?s remains. He said he was shocked to discover that Garavaglia had neglected to examine the interior of the toddler?s skull.

?The skull, the head, is part of the body, and when you do an autopsy you examine the whole body,? he said.

Mexico to face Guatemala in CONCACAF quarterfinals

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey, June 18 (AP): The director of Mexico's Gold Cup team says his squad will win the regional tournament, with or without replacements for the five players dropped after testing positive for a banned substance.

Hector Inaturri said Friday that while Mexico would benefit from replacing the suspended players, they really aren't needed.

FIFA approved the request to replace the players and asked CONCACAF, the regional governing body, to implement it.

Mexico is still awaiting a decision from CONCACAF.

Mexico, the defending champion, will play Guatemala in the second Gold Cup quarterfinal at the New Meadowlands Stadium on Saturday after Honduras and Costa Rica.

GRIFF THE INVISIBLE (2010) Movie Trailer: Leon Ford, Ryan Kwanten

Ryan Kwanten, Griff the Invisible, 2010

The Griff the Invisible Trailer has premiered. Leon Ford?s Griff the Invisible (2010) movie trailer stars Ryan Kwanten, Maeve Dermody, Marshall Napier, Heather Mitchell, and Toby Schmitz. Griff the Invisible?s plot synopsis: ?By day Griff (Ryan Kwanten ? True Blood, Red Hill) is an everyday office worker, in an everyday town. He lives a secluded life, bullied by co-workers (Toby Schmitz) ? his protective brother his only friend. By night Griff assumes his other identity, roaming the dark streets protecting the innocent and the vulnerable from the dangers that lurk in the shadows ? he is the hero, GRIFF THE INVISIBLE.

Increasingly concerned by Griff?s eccentric behaviour, his brother (Patrick Brammall) attempts to draw him back into the ?real world?. In doing so he introduces Griff to Melody (Maeve Dermody) an equally eccentric and charming girl.

Fascinated by Griff?s idiosyncrasies, which are equal only to her own, Melody begins to fall for Griff. As Griff is forced to face up to realities of a mundane world, it is up to Melody to rescue GRIFF THE INVISIBLE for the sake of herself, Griff and their love for each other.?

The film seems very similar to Defendor and Boy Wonder (written about here: Film Review: Defendor and here: Film Review: Boy Wonder (2010), other average joe hero films, not all that different from the occupation of the main protagonist in Kick-Ass. I hope it is as good as Defendor and Boy Wonder and stirs as far away from Kick-Ass territory as possible. Read why I hope this here: Film Review: Kick-Ass.

Watch the Griff the Invisible movie trailer below and leave your thoughts on it. For more Griff the Invisible videos, photos, and information, check out our Griff the Invisible Page. Griff the Invisible will be released in US theaters on June 10, 2011.

How To Make The Best Slow Cooker Crockpot Recipes | Food & Drink

How To Make The Best Slow Cooker Crockpot Recipes

Slow cooker crockpot recipes can make the most delicious meals. A slow cooker is a great way to cook, and there?s a whole range of healthy slow cooker recipes to choose from. However, there a number of simple tips you can follow in order to make the most of your crockpot.

Filling Up Your Crockpot

Don?t fill your crockpot up to the top. Fill it up from one-half to two-thirds of the way up. If it?s too full, then the food won?t be able to cook well. On the other hand, if it?s not full enough, then the food will cook too fast. You should also be aware that ingredients at the bottom of the pot will not only cook the quickest but will be the most moist, as all the liquids move to this area.

Crockpot Temperatures

Slow cooker crockpot recipes are meant to be cooked for a long period and will specify if you need to keep the temperature high or low. The low setting is approximately 200?C while the high is around 300?C. Two hours on a low setting is the equivalent to one hour on high.

The lowest the temperature should be is 140?C. If you can, test that the temperature is at least this after 4 hours of cooking on a low heat. If it isn?t at least this temperature, then your crockpot is probably broken. It?s advised that, for the first hour, you cook at a high heat to bring the temperature up to 140?C as quickly as possible. This is a main reason for not using frozen food: It slows down reaching this vital temperature.

Cooking Meat

Many slow cooker crockpot recipes involve cooking meat. It?s advisable to get rid of excess fat on your meat and take the skin off poultry. This is because the fat will simply melt when cooked for such a long time, and the resulting texture isn?t very pleasant. In addition, foods containing a lot of fat cook at a much faster rate.

A lot of meat needs around 8 hours in a crockpot. The longer you cook the meat, the more moist and tender the end result will be. If the meat piece is large, it?s better to brown it first as this will add to the flavor.

For ground meat, you have to fry it in a pan beforehand.

Cooking Vegetables

As vegetables cook at a slower rate to meat, they should be placed at the bottom of the pot. However, tender vegetables, like tomatoes and mushrooms, shouldn?t be added until the last 45 minutes to ensure they don?t overcook.

There?s a wide array of slow cooker recipes to choose from. Whatever your dietary requirements and culinary tastes, you?ll be spoiled for choice by all the healthy slow cooker recipes.

Crockpot recipes are healthy and delicious. However, by using a few extra pieces of advice, you can be sure that your slow cooker crockpot recipes taste their best.

Tech Savvy Mama: Dads Dish on How Fatherhood Has Changed: 'Wait ...

In honor of tomorrow being Father's Day, I have a great guest post by?Robbie Cape, Co-Founder and CEO of Cozi.com. ?I'm a huge fan of the free Cozi service and was first introduced to it this fall by a reader during a series of posts I wrote for My Life Scoop. ?You can read about that later but for now, enjoy Robbie's post and to all the dads out there who faithfully read Tech Savvy Mama- Happy Father's Day!

?Wait Until Your Father Gets Home? No Longer Applies: Dads Dish on How Fatherhood Has Changed

By?Robbie Cape, Co-Founder and CEO of?Cozi.com

My business partner and I, both dads, had the same challenge of keeping track of our families? busy schedulesand as we talked with other families it became clear we weren?t alone. The number one challenge for each of the families we talked to was managing family logistics, and this realization was the spark that led to the creation of a shared calendar focused exclusively on the family called Cozi. Organization is critical to functioning families because at the end of the day if you don?t have things together, it can cause major headaches (forgetting to pick kids up from T-ball practice, having to reschedule your doctor?s appointment for the third time or worse yet, forgetting your anniversary).?

When asked how fatherhood today differs from generations past, more than halfof dads volunteered that the biggest changes are shifts in parents? roles: More moms are working and parents are splitting household tasks more evenly, so dads are much more involved in their children?s lives. The new balance of responsibilities in today?s family was further illustrated by the fact that nearly 10 percentof the dads polled were stay-at-home fathers.

One dad summed it up this way: ?Fathers are much more involved in their kids? lives and activities, as well as home life. ?Wait until your father comes home? does not apply today.?

Of course, with dual working parents, an ever-growing list of extra-curriculars for the kids and multiple other appointments, juggling home life is crazier than ever. Twenty-two percentof dads said one of the biggest changes in this generation is that families are busier than before. When asked about their biggest struggles, seven out of 10 dads cited keeping the family organized as the biggest pain point.Dads are a critical part of the solution: one in four are the main organizers in their families and nearly all?85 percent?said they are somewhat or very involved in managing the family?s schedule. When it comes to keeping the family on track, dads are digital all the way?their favorite organization tools are cell phones, electronic calendars like Cozi and computers. It?s clear that today?s dads are shouldering parenting responsibilities in new ways. Fathers are going the extra mile to be the best dads they can be and get their loved ones organized and on-track. Cozi salutes these involved dads this Father?s Day!??Want to know more about Cozi? ?Read my review on My Life Scoop.?

The Celtics have lent their support by donating a basketball signed by every player from the final 2010-11 roster.

Those items are in addition to the Springfield Armor memorabilia as well as the items donated by the New Jersey Nets, the exclusive NBA affiliate of the Armor.

And there could be more coming from the Nets and the NBA.

?Working closely with the Nets and the NBA, they?ve expressed interest in contributing to the final total,? Armor director of marketing and public relations Eli Pearlstein said. ?The Nets and the NBA have been in touch with (the Armor) every day about the auction. We?re very confident about the strength of the single affiliation on the floor and pleased with the way the Nets have worked with us off the floor.?
