Outnumbered 3 to 1: Uppityshirts Review - The Perfect Gift for ...

If you don't know what recalcitrant means, I wouldn't bother reading any further. Seriously, Timothy Cataldo was walking into Clark's Dairy in New Haven, Connecticut one day recently when he bumped into a woman wearing a t-shirt that said, simply, "ho". His first thought was ho means "good" in Cantonese. His second: how could such an obviously intelligent (and educated) Ivy-Leaguer wear something so trite and demeaning? He decided to start a company right then and there to dumb t-shirt humor up, and save the world.

Thus Uppityshirts (UP-i-tee shirts, get it?) was born, mostly as an antidote to what Cataldo sees as today's pervasive and persistent sophomor(on)ic humor and lame p.c. posturing. The first Uppityshirt, a tongue-in-cheek ode to that lost lovely, "Yalebait", was an immediate hit and soon sold out. Uppityshirts.com now has a Baker's Dozen, including "caffiend", "I'd Rather Be Grammatically Correct" and "Old's Cool", as well as some other smart-alecky stuff in the new "Smarten Up!" product line like "Comeuppance - Just Desserts in a Can." and "Smart Pills - The Perfect Cure for Stupidity."

My husband has fallen out of every category for gifts every year. I tell him, "Your complicated!" To which he obviously replies that he has no idea what I'm talking about. I sigh and move on to generally purchasing the same typical things each year. The problem in shopping for him is that he is one of those intellectual witty people that are not geeky (like myself) so I can't get him geekery gifts, but he isn't into BBQ, Fishing or Golf. When I think of my husband I think of Jackson Pollack, David Foster Wallace, Thomas Pynchon, Werner Herzog, etc. It also doesn't help that he is a musician / music know-all that used to write music reviews and collects artifacts, to which he is very skilled in as well. He's just one of those people and they don't really have their own genre. Well... until I came across Uppity Shirts!I must have seemed a bit manic when first looking at their shop, the excitement that flooded through me to find a place that was absolutely perfect for him was a bit on the loony side, I admit. Their T-shirts are extremely witty and humorous, my personal favorite being "Yalebait" but that only works if you went to Yale I suppose. So for my husband I chose this Piece of Work:

A Piece of Work.

It goes without saying that there are a number of less-than-talented poseurs putting incredibly dumb junk out there - just for the fame and money! Do not be fooled: Ars gratia (Sm)artis.

For a man who continually debates with me about the difference between talented artists and crap regardless of skill, this was perfect. It arrived beautifully packaged! I was sincerely amazed by this and also loved the tags that were both on the shirt and the package itself.
My husband loves the t-shirt, especially since my toddler has had him wearing an Elmo shirt off and on for days. The Smart Pills so nicely tucked into the package were a nice touch and regardless of Father's Day, I think this store is just the perfect touch for any man like my husband, any day. Thank you for smarting up the world with your t-shirts, Mr. Cataldo, I believe if more people wore Uppityshirts rather than "Got Beer" we'd be in a much better place.
