CBS Sports: Bobby Hurley has no regrets after turning down Wagner job

Bobby Hurley only needed a few hours to make his decision.

Hurley's brother, Dan, had decided to leave Wagner for Rhode Island in mid-March and Bobby was summoned to meet with the Wagner brass -- the president and athletic director -- 10 minutes after it became official. He was then offered the job to stick around and replace his brother on Staten Island.

"I thought about it, went home and talked to my wife and called a couple hours later and told them I was going to Rhode Island with Dan," he said.

It's not often that guys turn down D-1 head coaching jobs -- especially ones that may compete for league titles as will likely be the case at Wagner this coming season. The Seahawks were 25-6 last season, 15-3 in league play, return four starters and add Michigan State transfer Dwaun Anderson.

But the Hurley boys wanted to stay together longer than just a couple years in the D-1 ranks and build something at URI.

"I know a lot of people thought it was surprising that I didn't take the job at Wagner," said the 41-year-old former Duke standout. "But I love working with Dan and our families love being around each other, also."

"I struggled with the loyalty to Wagner," he admitted. "It took some time coming to grips with not being around those guys anymore."

The Hurley's racked up an impressive 38-23 mark in two seasons at Wagner, which wound up keeping it in the family and hiring Hurley's other assistant, Bashir Mason, to take the reigns. Now these guys will take over another major rebuilding task, a program coming off a 7-24 campaign and a team that has been decimated by defections recently.

Rhode Island will struggle this season, but the Hurley's have started to add pieces in an effort to make the Rams competitive in 2013-14. Rutgers transfer Gil Biruta will sit out this season after transferring. That'll also be the case for Rice transfer Jarelle Reischel.

"It's going to take some time," Bobby said.

But the brothers -- and sons of legendary high school coach Bob Hurley -- will do it together instead of parting ways after just two seasons.

"I figured we'd coach together for a long time," Dan Hurley said. "But it happened so fast."

Is Dog Training The Right Thing For You? | Love My Pets GPS Pet ...

TIP! A clicker can be a useful tool for positive reinforcement. Using a clicker is simple.

Training is arguably among the most important things you can do for your pet. Having a dog that?s happy to do what you say, is a great thing. In this article you will learn just how beneficial training your best friend can be.

TIP! Whenever you are teaching a dog a multi-step task, reduce it to a series of smaller tasks. A good thing to teach your dog to do is to get the paper in the morning.

When you are trying to house train a puppy, it is not going to learn overnight, so be prepared. Always immediately clean-up any messes your dog makes. If the accident is left behind, the smell will make your pet think it?s okay to eliminate in that spot. It will be difficult to discourage his eliminating in that spot once a habit is formed. Your local animal store may have numerous products to help eliminate this.

TIP! Understand when it may be time to call in the professionals. If you are not seeing the kind of results you would like, it may be time to call in reinforcements.

Consistency is important during your dog training. Make a list of the commands that you are teaching your dog, and be sure that everyone in your household knows them. It is also recommended that everyone use the same positive reinforcements for good behavior and negative response when the dog is disobedient. By having different responses from different people will most likely confuse the dog, which may make the training more problematic.

TIP! If you are thinking about hiring a professional dog trainer, conduct a thorough interview and ask for referrals. Talk to your behavior specialist and make sure that you are on the same page with the ideas and techniques that you would like to see implicated for your pet.

If a dog experiences separation anxiety, it should get experience being around others. Your dog must begin relationships with other people in order to help solve its improper fixation with you.

TIP! Dog training may end up being a bit of a chore if you?re training more than one dog at a time because often, when dogs are together they won?t be able to stay concentrated. Try training your dogs independently if you find them losing concentration during group training.

When you are having a training session, keep the atmosphere positive and encouraging. Always give your dog some sort of reward when it behaves according to your direction. Using negative reactions and punishment don?t work and they will cause your dog to fear you.

TIP! For a dog to become house trained you should always have them on the same feeding schedule everyday, so their elimination time is always the same. This gives you important forehand knowledge to prevent accidents and your dog an association of cause and effect to follow.

Use your dog?s name whenever you are offering it a treat. This will teach your dog to respond when you call, and will give you good control in possibly challenging situations. Call your dog by name 10 times each day until he readily responds to your voice with no further encouragement. Do not punish your dog if he comes to you when calling his name. It can be counterproductive if he equates his name with punishment.

TIP! Consistency is key during your training sessions. Pick a single word or gesture for each command, action or behavior and use it exclusively.

If you are bringing a new pet into the family, make sure to introduce them to any existing pets slowly. Give your own pet great consideration before bringing another animal into the house. You can boost bonding efforts by getting a new pet that has a complimentary personality to your own.

TIP! One way to ensure your dog?s cooperation during the training process is to know what type of treats it prefers. Rewarding him with his favorite treat will be much more satisfying and motivate him to better performance in training.

One thing you can try is to have your dog learn to hold toys in his mouth. Get your dog?s attention with a clicker and reward him with a snack when he tastes or mouths the toy. Wait until the dog has the toy in his mouth. Once he does, click and reward. Then move on to only rewarding him for holding the toy or object in his mouth.

TIP! Pay attention to how much time you spend training in one session. Dog attention spans only go so far, so make sure not to go on too long.

While training your puppy, don?t play tug-of-war. These games often encourage a puppy to start biting. You want to avoid having your puppy become accustomed to this behavior, so it is better to postpone these games until the dog is more mature and fully trained.

TIP! The first step in your puppy training would be to teach him his name. This will create a nice bond between the two of you.

Your dog has to have a consistent set of rules in order to learn the difference between right and wrong. This means to set firm rules for everyone to follow regarding your pet. Anytime someone else deviates from what you are teaching, your efforts are less effective.

TIP! Never tie two or more dogs in close vicinity to one another. The dogs chains could get tangled up and cause harm to the dogs as they struggle to get free.

Keep your dog outside while you are away from home to prevent it from chewing on your items. If you cannot do this, try closing the doors of the rooms that contain the items and putting the other tempting things out of their reach.

TIP! Training should be fun for your dog. Keep training to a short 10-15 minute session; much longer and your dog?s attention will wander.

Communication is key in the relationship with your dog. Be consistent and clear when training your dog. Rewards, corrections and body and verbal language should all be in harmony. Be well aware that your dog is telling you something too. The dog?s actions will indicate if he is becoming over worked and if he is giving the training his full attention.

TIP! When potty training your dog, stay away from wee-wee pads. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind.

As you have seen, training your dog is an investment you will enjoy for many years. Having a dog that behaves badly could ruin your house, make everyone stressed out and end up with no one wanting the dog there. By heeding the information in this article, you can make the wise choice and help your dog be a lovable pet

Japan anti-nuclear groups protest at parliament

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people protested against nuclear power outside Japan's parliament on Sunday, the same day a proponent of using renewable energy to replace nuclear following the Fukushima disaster was defeated in a local election.

The protesters, including old-age pensioners, pressed up against a wall of steel thrown up around the parliament building shouting, "We don't need nuclear power" and other slogans.

On the main avenue leading to the assembly, the crowd broke through the barriers and spilled onto the streets, forcing the police to bring in reinforcements and deploy armored buses to buttress the main parliament gate.

The protest came as results from rural Yamaguchi showed that Tetsunari Iida, an advocate of renewable energy to replace nuclear power, lost his bid to become governor to a rival backed by the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which promoted nuclear power during its decades in power, Kyodo news agency reported, citing exit polls.

Iida, who wants Japan to exit nuclear power by 2020, had promised to revitalize Yamaguchi's economy with renewable energy projects and opposed a project by Chubu Electric Power Co to build a new nuclear plant in the town of Kaminoseki.

Energy policy has become a major headache for Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, who less than a year in office is battling to hold his Democratic Party together before a general election due next year but which could come sooner.

Weekly protests outside Noda's office have grown in size in recent months, with ordinary salary workers and mothers with children joining the crowds.

On Sunday, the protesters - holding candles as darkness fell on the hot summer day - took their demonstration to parliament.

Chanting "oppose restarts", they pressed against steel barriers erected around the parliament building, where thousands of police were deployed to keep the peace.

Many of the crowd had marched past the headquarters of Tokyo Electric Power Co, the company at the heart of the worst nuclear crisis since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

"We are here to oppose nuclear power, which is simply too dangerous," Hiroko Yamada, an elderly woman from Saitama prefecture near Tokyo, said.

"(Noda) isn't listening to us. He only listens to companies and Yonekura," she said, referring to Hiromasa Yonekura, the chairman of Japan's biggest business lobby.

An upset victory by Iida, 53, would have added to Noda's woes as the government tries to decide on an energy portfolio to replace a 2010 program that would have boosted nuclear power's share of electricity supply to more than half by 2030.

Still, Iida's support from volunteers in the conservative stronghold bodes ill for the Democrats and the LDP, support for which has failed to benefit greatly from Noda's woes, Kyodo said in an analysis of the local vote.

"The brave battle by Iida, who sought a change in energy policy, can be said to be proof the popular call to exit nuclear power has spread even to Yamaguchi," the news agency said.

Noda, who approved the restart of two idled reactors this month, has said he would decide on a new medium-term energy plan in August, although media reports over the weekend said that decision could be delayed.

Experts have proposed three options: zero nuclear power as soon as possible, a 15 percent atomic share of electricity by 2030, or 20-25 percent by the same date compared to almost 30 percent before the Fukushima disaster.

Under pressure from businesses worried about stable electricity supply, Noda has been thought to be leaning toward 15 percent, which would require all of Japan's 50 reactors to resume operations before gradually closing older units.

The growing anti-nuclear movement, however, may make that choice difficult, some experts said.

Multiple inquiries into the March 11, 2011 nuclear crisis, in which a huge quake-induced tsunami devastated the Fukushima plant, causing meltdowns and forcing mass evacuations, have underscored the failure by authorities and utilities to adopt strict safety steps or disaster response plans.

Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

While it is possible to improve a home's energy efficiency in any climate, the predominant weather in an area has an impact on which efficiency measures will be the most valuable. For example, in especially cold areas such as Juneau or especially hot areas such as Phoenix replacement windows can cause a marked change in the cost of heating or cooling a house, whereas the impact of new windows in a more moderate climate will be less.

Any time you set out to improve your home's energy efficiency there are three dynamics to keep in mind. First, generating energy at your home from a clean source is far more efficient. Second, lighting your home more efficiently cuts down on energy consumption. Third, heating and cooling your home more efficiently is often the single most important area of overall efficiency.

The climate that you live in will, to a great degree, dictate your ability to generate power on your property. Those who live in a rainy climate, for example, won't benefit from solar panels the way that those who live in a sunny climate will. And it's pointless to install a windmill where there isn't any wind. But if you can generate power it's a good idea to do so: energy burns off in wires, so the shorter the distance is between production and plug the better.

One exception is a geothermal well, which generates power based on the exchange of heat between one end of a rod that is sunk deep into the ground and the other end of the rod, which is exposed. The temperature below the ground is fifty-six degrees Fahrenheit all the time, so any time the temperature above the ground is different (higher or lower) a geothermal well can generate electricity.

But producing power is only one way to increase efficiency. Reducing your home's consumption of power is just as important, and one of the most significant consumers of power is lighting. This can be changed by switching high efficiency light bulbs for the standard ones or by correcting bad habits. Simply turning the lights off when you leave a room can save a lot of electricity and substantially improve efficiency.

Beyond these simple fixes, it is possible to improve the way you light your home by making better use of natural light. In older homes that tend to have smaller windows, you can make a significant change by increasing the size and quantity of those windows. Even without structural changes, using mirrors to reflect (and reuse) natural light can greatly reduce your reliance on artificial lights powered by electricity.

Most people spend the most money on heating and cooling their homes, which means that heating and cooling use the most power. This can be mitigated by installing newer, more efficient equipment, as well as by improving the insulation of your home to bring it up to today's construction standards. The better insulated a home is, the less affected it is by the temperature outside.

In addition to re-insulating the home, replacing windows can demonstrably improve efficiency. The value of new windows has been well enough established that in hot places like Los Angeles and Phoenix replacement windows qualify for rebates from most utilities. Replacing the windows creates a good (and often subsidized) opportunity to expand the size of windows wherever possible, increasing the amount of natural light available inside the home.

PFT: Holmgren's future in Cleveland still cloudy

Father-and-Son

With defensive coordinator Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely and no other person holding the title even on an interim basis and with the Rams putting on the pads Sunday for the first time in the Jeff Fisher era, an important question remains.

Who?s running the defense?

The coaching staff has three men who have held the ?defensive coordinator? title at the NFL level:? Fisher, assistant head coach Dave McGinnis, and secondary coach Chuck Cecil.

But the defense being installed is the Gregg Williams defense.? So who?s in best position to actually implement it?

It?s possibly linebackers coach Blake Williams.? As in the son of Gregg Williams.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis recently explained that, to date, it?s been a committee approach when it comes to coaching the defense.? But the only coach Laurinaitis mentioned by name was Blake Williams.

?A different [day] in practice it?ll be a different guy calling the plays,? Laurinaitis told 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, via SportsRadioInterviews.com.? ?We have Blake Williams, Gregg Williams? son, and he kind of grew up in this defense.? It?s safe to say that on some of the modifications of Gregg Williams? defense over the years has been because of Blake and his intelligence.?

And here?s where a cynic would wonder, as some in league circles have, whether Blake Williams will be serving as a surrogate for Gregg Williams in 2012.? Yeah, Gregg Williams is suspended and he can?t talk to anyone from the team.? But he surely can talk to his own son ? and unless the league office will be monitoring those communications, Gregg Williams can share thoughts with his son regarding how his son is doing his job.

In theory, father and son also can get together from time to time.? Dinner, for example, once or twice a week.? Absent supervision from 345 Park Avenue, what?s to keep them from working to put together a game plan for the upcoming game?

We?re not saying it will happen.? And we take no position on whether it would be justified by the league?s arguable overreaction to the Saints? pay-for-performance system.

The point is that, with no one identified as the interim defensive coordinator and with the son of the defensive coordinator on the coaching staff, the Rams (if everyone is discreet) can still find a way to get the benefit of Gregg Williams? insights, ideas, and strategies.

Exclusive - Human Genome rejected Amgen's $7 billion bid in 2010: sources

NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Amgen Inc , the world's largest biotech company, had offered to acquire Human Genome Sciences Inc for $35 per share two years ago, but the preliminary $7 billion (4.4 billion pounds) bid was rejected by its smaller U.S. rival, two people familiar with the situation said on Thursday.

Amgen, at the time, was hunting aggressively for potential acquisitions to reinvigorate its product portfolio.

Human Genome, which last week agreed to be bought by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Plc for $14.25 per share -- or $3 billion -- said in a filing with regulators last week that the company had received, and rebuffed, a preliminary takeover bid at $35 per share in August 2010. It did not identify the prospective buyer.

News of the $35 per share offer suggests GSK played its hand well by biding its time before pouncing on its long-time partner when the stock was down in the dumps earlier this year.

Human Genome's board, consulted by its advisers at the time, decided not to pursue a sale at the proposed price, given that regulatory approval for Benlysta -- the first new treatment for lupus in 50 years -- was expected later in 2010, the company said in the filing last week.

According to the people familiar with the situation, Amgen was the company that made that approach in 2010. The people asked not to be identified because the matter was not public.

Representatives for Amgen declined to comment. Human Genome did not return calls for a comment.

Amgen itself proved uninterested when invited back by Human Genome as a potential "white knight" to fend off GSK's initial unsolicited approach in April this year.

According to the filing by Human Genome, the company received a letter from an unnamed third party on August 3, 2010, indicating its "preliminary interest in pursuing a possible acquisition of all of the outstanding common stock of the company at a price of $35.00 per share in cash."

The offer was declined around a week later, the filing shows.

Times, of course, were different then. Human Genome was still riding high on hopes for Benlysta -- rights to which are shared equally with GSK -- and the stock closed at $26.33 on August 2, 2010.

Benlysta went on to win approval by the Food and Drug Administration in March 2011, though early sales since its launch have disappointed investors and Human Genome's shares have plummeted since.

"The company then believed that its best long-term strategic alternative was to remain an independent company and pursue the commercialization of Benlysta and the development of the other products then in its pipeline," Human Genome said in the filing.

"Following the receipt of the $13.00 Offer from GSK, that third party declined the company's invitation to participate in the company's strategic alternative review process," Human Genome added.

The U.S. pioneer of gene-based drug discovery was formed 20 years ago with the mission to isolate genes and identify their function in order to develop new drugs. Over the years it has had a rollercoaster ride as hopes for its drugs have waxed and waned.

Human Genome, whose shares touched as high as $30 last year, were trading at around $7 just before GSK's initial $13 per share offer was made public on April 19. The British drugmaker eventually sweetened its offer to $14.25 per share to clinch the deal.

GSK's successful offer may have represented a 99 percent premium to the price before it stepped into the fray, but it is still a bargain compared with what Amgen was ready to pay.

Amgen's then-CEO, Kevin Sharer, told a Goldman Sachs conference in June 2010 that he was "aggressively" looking at acquisitions.

"We will take a risk in acquisitions, but it will be a measured risk. It sure won't be a bet-the-company risk," he said at the time.

For Amgen, with a market value of some $60 billion, Human Genome would certainly have fitted the bill as a significant, if not transformational, bolt-on deal.

In fact, some industry analysts, including Michael Yee of RBC Capital Markets, said at the time that Human Genome was the most sensible takeover target for Sharer's acquisition-hungry team.

Other companies touted as possible targets for Amgen in 2010 and into 2011 included Actelion , a Swiss biotech company with a dominant position in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare heart and lung condition.

Appropriate identification and management of candidates for active ...

Three papers published on line in the Journal of Urology last week have meaningful implications for greater standardization of the ways physicians need to make decisions about the appropriate identification, selection, and management of candidates for active surveillance as compared to immediate therapy.

In the first of these papers, Eifler et al. have looked carefully at the causes of death of > 18,000? men undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) at Johns Hopkins between 1975 and 2009.

It is widely believed that men treated with RP at Johns Hopkins are not generally representative of the US male prostate cancer population. This study tends to confirm that belief, showing that:

  • The median age at surgery was just 59.0 years.
  • 96.4 percent of these patients had a clinical stage of T1c or T2 disease before surgery.
  • 65.4 percent had a pathological (post-surgical) stage of pT2 disease.
  • Only 4.2 percent were shown to have seminal vesicle invasion post-surgery.

However, the study also shows that men treated with RP at Johns Hopkins also have a very different type of life expectancy than the average American male. Indeed, comparison of the mortality of men treated with RP at Johns Hopkins to the mortality of men in the general American population gives a standardized mortality ratio or SMR of just 0.47. Almost half of the men receiving an RP at Johns Hopkins actually died of a second form of cancer as opposed to the things most Americans die of (heart disease, for example).

Eifler et al. conclude that, in the Johns Hopkins series of patients, ?Overall survival after [RP] is excellent. Men who undergo [RP] usually die of a nonprostate cancer cause.? However, it is just as easy to argue that men receiving an RP at Johns Hopkins since 1979 have been much healthier on average than men getting RPs at community hospitals and other centers around the country. (After all, most of the men being treated at Johns Hopkins over the past 30 years have self-selected to be treated at that institution, suggesting a far higher level of health consciousness than the average.) This is by no means a criticism of Johns Hopkins, but what it does suggest is that the long-term, overall survival rates of the men being treated at Johns Hopkins (92.6 percent at 10 years and 69.2 percent at 20 years) are not reasonable expectations for the average prostate cancer patient. What this study also does help to demonstrate, however, is that for otherwise very healthy men with low-risk, early stage prostate cancer and a life expectancy of 20+ years, radical prostatectomy may well extend life ? if the patient really does have potentially clinically significant disease.

In the second paper, Barzell et al. address the relative merits of a repeat, TRUS-guided, biopsy and a transperineal mapping biopsy (TPM) as methods to confirm the suitability of patients for entry into active surveillance protocols after an initial diagnosis.

The paper describes findings of a study in which 124 men received both types of biopsy carried out at a single sitting by the same urologist. Depending on how one chooses to define ?clinically important? prostate cancer, Barzell and his colleagues showed that:

  • Between 8 and 22 percent of the patients had ?clinically important? disease on TRUS-guided re-biopsy (i.e., disease that would exclude patients from active surveillance).
  • Between 41 and 80 percent of the patients had ?clinically important? disease on TPM.
  • Repeat TRUS-guided biopsy ?missed? between 76 and 80 percent of ?clinically important? cancers detected by TPM.

The authors say that their results ?indicate that the TRUS biopsy derived status of of favorable risk prostate cancer is not a secure one.? Nevertheless, only 17/124 of their patients actually went on to have a radical prostatectomy. Haas and Delongchamps, in editorial comments about this paper, state that, ?These results need to be interpreted with caution? and that other recent clinical reports ?dispute the advantage of template guided transperineal biopsy regimens.?

The ?New? Prostate Cancer InfoLink thinks that this will be an area of controversy for some time to come. A repeat biopsy of some type prior to be placed on an active surveillance protocol may well be very wise for men with a life expectancy of 10 or more years. Whether a TPM-type biopsy is really necessary may be a very different question.

Finally, a paper by Richey et al. has looked at the quality of care of men undergoing expectant management (i.e., watchful waiting or active surveillance) among a representative cohort of > 5,200 patients from 984 hospitals across the USA, using? RAND quality of care assessment methodology. The basic results of this study fall into two categories:

  • Compliance with the RAND structural measures was high (at > 80 percent). In other words, things like the levels of staffing and specialized care were good.
  • Compliance with process indicators varied considerably, implying a need for greater focus on such factors as patient follow-up processes and physician communication.

If expectant management is to become an effective and well-established method for management of a major subset of all men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer, the quality of physician communication with the patients, and the necessity for regular, routine follow-up, will both be crucial.

Read This Article To Become Educated On The Stock Market ...

From pros to novices, knowing how to invest correctly can help you make money in stocks. Besides buying low and selling high, there are several helpful tips to increase profits! Continue on to the article below so you begin to learn how to be a profitable investor.

Do not let people persuade you into doing things you aren?t comfortable doing. Even though you should listen to other people?s advice at times, you shouldn?t let anyone convince you to invest in stocks that you just aren?t comfortable investing in. Always be aware of any internal signals when you are choosing investments. You want to be the one that dictates your success as well as your failures; it?s the best way you?re going to learn.

When you are planning out the diversification of your portfolio, keep in mind that there are many different factors leading to diversification; it is not just all about different sectors. Not only that, you don?t have to implement all the factors into your investment plan. However, it?s key to diversify your investments across many sectors or industries to ensure you are not exposed in the event of a crash.

Don?t just pay attention to a stock?s price: consider its value. Are you going to be investing in a long-term stock? If the price is lower than normal, find out why before you invest, so you know beforehand if it is a good investment or not. Don?t buy a stock just because it?s cheap unless you know that it has the potential to be a moneymaker.

You should never invest more than ten percent of the funds you have available for investment into one stock. Invest only between five and ten percent of capital funds in any one investment instrument in order to protect yourself from bad investments. This limits your downside risk. If the stock tanks, you will still have some powder left to fight with later. You should never expose yourself too much with any one stock.

Don?t attempt to time any market. History has shown that people who steadily invest even sums of money over time do better in the long run. All you need to do is to decide how much money you can safely afford to invest. Start making regular investments and dedicate yourself to repeating the process.

Learn about the stock market by watching what it does. Studying the stock market at length is recommended before purchasing your first investment. Keeping your eyes trained to see if the market is going up or down takes a minimum of three years as a basis of analysis. This will give you a view of how the market operates and increase your chances of profitability.

Think about investing in stocks with your retirement plan such as a 401k. The money you invest will be inaccessible until the point of your retirement, but the account will allow you to save money as far as taxes go. If you use any retirement funds to invest in the market you will have a nice financial cushion for yourself.

One conservative approach to stock investing is to stick with companies in the sectors that offer stability. However, it?s advised that you monitor up and coming sectors and companies as well since they represent the future economy. Your stock market portfolio should include a few stocks from companies that are creating products for the future.

Researching companies you?ve invested in, including specific financial, technical and macro economic information, can help you outperform the market. Instead of going on second-hand knowledge, keep up to day and informed on a daily basis! Remember these tips, so that you can make the most profits possible from investments.

iTunes in the Cloud movies find their way to Australia, Canada, UK and 32 more countries

The advent of movie support in iTunes for the Cloud was a boon to Apple TV owners as well as any iTunes user with a tendency to hop between devices -- within the US, that is. Apple today swung the doors open and let Australia, Canada, the UK as well as 32 other countries and regions around the world get access to their movies whenever they're signed in through iTunes or an iOS device. Not every studio is on the same page, as many American viewers will know all too well: it's more likely that you'll get re-download rights for a major studio title such as Lockout than an indie production, for example. Even with that limit in mind, there's no doubt more than a few movie mavens glad to avoid shuffling and re-syncing that copy of Scott Pilgrim to watch it through to the end.

Home birth, without a midwife: Unassisted childbirth

We were able to catch up with Amy and learn why she chose this method of birth and what they have planned this December.

Origins

SK: Tell me a little about yourself?? where you grew up, where you live now?

Amy: I grew up in the small town of Harvard, Nebraska. I lived there my whole growing-up years and graduated high school there. Went to college in Norfolk, Nebraska at Nebraska Christian College for a semester and then got married and we have kind of moved all over Nebraska and for a brief stint in Kansas where my husband is from. Currently we live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

SK: Did you have any attachment parenting role models in your life as you were growing up?

Amy: Funny you ask. I have been trying to figure this one out a lot lately. I wouldn?t say yes per se?? although my parents were pretty hands-on, they definitely weren?t AP. I think I had an older cousin who was probably my biggest role model in that department (although I?m sure she had no idea). I know that is where I saw breastfeeding from the light of ?no big deal, when Baby is hungry it?s just something you do wherever you are.? I?m very thankful for that.

"I knew very specifically what kind of mom I wanted to be"

Despite not having a huge AP role model from an early age, I always wanted to be a mom, and for me I knew very specifically what kind of mom I wanted to be?? how I wanted to care for my children; I guess it was just instinctual more than anything. No one had shown me but also no one had taken that away, if that makes sense.

SK: When did you meet your husband? How did you know he was ?the one??

Amy: Austin was from Kansas but was going to school at Nebraska Christian College and needed a summer job. One of his good friends was going to work at a log home building business in my small town. We ate supper together a lot at their house as well as I worked at the grocery store and he often came in there.

He came back to work the following summer also and that is when he offered to fix the stereo in my car. I brought my car over for him to tinker with that night and after that we were pretty much inseparable. When I went off to college he quit his job, followed me?? and the rest is history. We were engaged a month and three weeks later to the shock of our friends and family. And as far as how did I know, well, it?s cheesy but I just knew. I think when you know, you know.

SK: Did you both have similar philosophies when you began discussing having children, or did you both inspire one another as your children came along?

Amy: We discussed things a little but I don?t think you really know until you start having them. I think we just both feed off of each other. The one thing I did know was that I wanted to be there, to be physically present. I wanted parenting to be my main focus rather than a nine to five job. I didn?t want to miss one second of their little lives. And I didn?t want them to grow up with a babysitter who was closer to them than I was or feeling like they were constantly being shoved off with someone else.

Having babies

SK: What was your first birth like?

Amy: When it was time to choose a provider, the receptionist said, ?Would you like to go with the midwife we have?? and I said, ?Sure!? and that?s how it all began. I?m not sure I put much thought into that part but I remember being excited when I heard the term midwife and I vaguely knew what that was.

I ended up being induced on my son?s due date. It was of my own hounding that this came about not because of any medical necessity. I wasn?t where I am now and just didn?t think anything of it. Like many first-time moms, I was a frequent flyer saying, ?Is this it? Is this labor?? I didn?t know it was OK and dandy to go after your due date.

"My plan was to birth in water. Oh that tub was heavenly"

I was very excited about the birth pool. My plan was to birth in water. Oh that tub was heavenly. It was a hard-sided Aqua Doula and the depth was amazing! I could go on and on about how it felt to be in there. Contractions slowed down so I ended up getting out so I could be hooked back up [to] the pit and that was kind of a trend? get hooked up, get them going and monitor, get unhooked, get back in the pool and relax. After some pushing in the water I ended up getting out and delivering him on land.

After two and a half hours of pushing, at just after midnight, (12:06 to be exact), I met my little boy Kalel. He was 8 pounds, 2-1/2 ounces. Everyone seemed suprised at his size. I was so so happy! We have it on video and the first words out of my mouth are, ?Oh yay! Now we can have another!? Of course everyone laughed but I was serious. I was a mom and I was hooked! Recovery was wonderful!

Nokia Reports Q2 2012 Results: ?7.5 billion In Net Sales, Negative EPS Of -$0.09

Nokia has just released its fiscal Q3 2012 financials. It’s reported ?7.5 billion in net sales, a slight increase from ?7.4 billion last quarter. Lumia sales are up to 4 million, and basic devices were also up to?73 million units. But it’s being done at discounted costs: net sales are down by five percent. Earnings per share are at -$0.09, failing to meet analyst guidance. Analysts expected the company to report a loss per share of between?$0.10?and $0.11, a drop of nearly 220 percent on the same quarter a year ago. Revenue estimates were $7.3 billion for the quarter, down slightly from the $7.4 billion reported for last quarter. It’s disappointing, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise. In June, Nokia had issued an update on its guidance for the quarter to revise down expectations. It said it expected higher restructuring charges — ?1.9 billion for the next two years — along with unprofitability in the devices unit with operating margins at more than negative three percent (before it had been a straight negative three percent). For a slightly heartbreaking backstory on a company that might have been looking to innovate too much before its time, and too slow to move with changes in the industry, check out this feature in the WSJ. At July lull, presidential race is close as ever

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The presidential race is entering the sultry summer, a final lull before the sprint to Election Day, with President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney neck and neck and no sign that either can break away.

As both candidates take a breather this week ? Romney at his lakeside compound in New Hampshire and Obama at the Camp David presidential retreat ? each sees problems he'd like to cure before Labor Day.

Obama and his allied groups aren't keeping pace with Romney and the Republican fundraising machine, and that places more pressure on the president to solicit huge sums himself. And the Supreme Court ruling that saved Obama's signature health care initiative last week didn't change the fact that most Americans don't like the law.

Romney's fundraising is impressive. But, in a sign of his hurdles, he's spending heavily in North Carolina, a state he almost certainly must win to have a chance at the White House. And some voters in key states appear uncomfortable with his record at a corporate restructuring firm before he became Massachusetts governor.

National polls suggest that Obama holds a small, perhaps meaningless lead as he awaits a new jobs report Friday that could bring bad news similar to last month's. Romney is offering few details of his own health and economic proposals for now, perhaps thinking outside forces will dislodge the president.

"When it's a 2 or 3 point race, that's not good for an incumbent president," said Republican strategist Rich Galen, who is not affiliated with Romney's campaign. "Obama's political career is totally dependent on Angela Merkel holding the eurozone together," he said, referring to the German chancellor and Europe's financial woes, which could further hurt the U.S. economy.

An eventful June began badly for Obama. Anemic job-creation numbers followed news that Romney's campaign was raising more money than his. Things got worse when Obama told reporters, "The private sector is doing fine," a line now featured in countless GOP attack ads.

The month ended better for Obama. The Supreme Court struck down much of Arizona's strict anti-immigration law, a law the president opposed. Then the justices upheld the 2010 national health care law, a victory that nonetheless forces Obama to keep defending an unpopular mandate to obtain insurance or pay a fee, which the court labeled a tax.

"Last week was a reminder to the American people of who the president is fighting for," said Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki. She cited "access to health care" and "immigration reform."

"But we're looking ahead, and we know this race is going to be really close," she said.

Obama on Thursday starts a two-day bus tour of Ohio and western Pennsylvania, a trip that partly mimics Romney's earlier and longer recent tour. The president might spend part of his drive time dialing for dollars. It's a chore all candidates face, but it poses new urgency for the president, because pro-Romney "super PACs" are raising far more campaign money than are Democratic groups.

In a leaked recording of a conference call Obama recently placed from Air Force One to top donors from 2008, the president implored them to match their earlier generosity. "We're going to have to deal with these super PACs in a serious way," Obama said, according to the Daily Beast.

Obama's team may find some comfort in knowing that since April 10, pro-Romney forces have spent more money on TV ads in North Carolina ? $6.4 million ? than in any other state except Florida and Ohio. Four years ago, Obama narrowly won North Carolina, which had voted Republican in seven straight presidential races. Most plausible scenarios for a Romney presidency require him to secure the state, the sooner the better.

The two campaigns, including their allied super PACs, are matching each other nearly dollar for dollar on TV ads in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Virginia and New Hampshire. Romney's forces are out-spending Obama's in Iowa and Michigan. The opposite is true in Colorado.

Romney is vacationing this week in New Hampshire, where family games might mix with talk of who his running mate should be. Romney, whose oversight of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games won wide praise, plans to attend the Summer Games later this summer in London.

He also will go to Israel, a trip that could appeal to Jewish voters and donors, and to conservatives who see Israel as a vital military and political ally.

Meanwhile, Republicans worry that Democrats are making headway with claims that Romney supported shipping jobs overseas when he headed a corporate restructuring firm called Bain Capital. His campaign says Romney did not oversee the export of U.S. jobs, although Bain at times invested in companies that helped pioneer outsourcing certain jobs to places such as India.

"It is a problem," Galen said of anti-Romney ads citing Bain and outsourcing. But he said the ads might have had greater impact if Obama could have saved them for September. Instead, Galen said, Democrats had to throw every weapon possible to counter the damage from Obama's "private sector is doing fine" remark.

It's not clear how June's biggest political headline ? the Supreme Court's decision to uphold "Obamacare" ? will play out in the campaign.

Congressional Republicans have jumped on the court's conclusion that a fee to be imposed on people who refuse to obtain health insurance is actually a tax. Romney tiptoes around the issue because the fee/tax is similar to one he imposed on Massachusetts residents who failed to buy medical insurance.

"Once the dust settles, the health care issue still serves as a way for both sides to motivate their respective bases, but it's hard to see it playing much of a role with the rest of the electorate," said Dan Schnur, a former Republican adviser who teaches political science at the University of Southern California. A more important issue, Schnur said, "is Bain vs. Solyndra."

Solyndra was a California-based solar panel manufacturer that received a large federal loan and big compliments from Obama before filing for bankruptcy.

"There's no question the Bain argument is working very effectively for Obama," Schnur said, "because it hits directly at voters' biggest concerns about a private sector-driven approach to the economy. But Solyndra accomplishes exactly the same thing for Romney, when he argues about too large a role for government."

The economy, Schnur said, will remain the top issue until polling places close on Nov. 6.

Summer vacations and Olympic Games might distract voters for the next several weeks, and political and legal activists might keep arguing over health care and immigration. But Romney is staking his candidacy on the claim that Obama has failed on the economy.

An election that seems destined to be tight will largely turn on voters' gut feelings about job security, the government's role in boosting or hindering employment, and candidates' visions for the nation's role in a global economy.

HTC Raider and EVO 3D Ice Cream Sandwich updates now available for Rogers

Rogers Devices

Rogers hasn't had a great track record thus far of keeping folks in the loop when it comes to Ice Cream Sandwich updates but at least two of the devices in their lineup are now getting ICS rolled out to them via OTA. Owners of either the HTC Raider or EVO 3D can go ahead and check for updates and now find Android 4.0 available. The update should only take a few minutes to load up and then you'll be good to go with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Thanks, John!

APNewsBreak: On verge of new particle discovery

GENEVA (AP) ? Scientists say the world's biggest atom smasher plans to announce Wednesday enough evidence has been gathered to show that the long-sought "God particle" answering fundamental questions about the universe does indeed exist.

But after decades of work and billions of dollars spent, researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, say they aren't quite ready to set off celebratory fireworks with an official discovery announcement.

Instead, experts familiar with the research at CERN's vast complex on the Swiss-French border say Monday its massive data will essentially show the footprint and shadow of the key particle known as the Higgs boson, rather than provide proof it has been glimpsed or discovered.

CERN theorist John Ellis says "we've discovered something which is consistent with being a Higgs."
