NeNe's 'Normal' Halloween costume? Matt Lauer

Tyler Golden / NBC

Rocky (NeNe Leakes) is instructed to dress up as Matt Lauer for Halloween on "The New Normal."

By Anna Chan, TODAY

It's Halloween in Los Angeles on "The New Normal," and if you thought fashion-forward Bryan (Andrew Rannells) -- who's also decorating his house to be the best on the block -- wouldn't have some say about the costumes, think again.

In the upcoming episode, the daddy-to-be tries to convince everyone to do a group Halloween costume. One person who doesn't exactly get to say no? His assistant, Rocky (NeNe Leakes). In a first look clip that NBC is sharing with The Clicker, Rocky shows up in her costume and isn't exactly pleased with her boss's choice.

"Who am I again?!" Rocky demands.

"Matt Lauer from the TODAY show!" Bryan responds. "He handles hard hitting news and cooking segments with equal aplomb!"

Check out the hilarious clip:

How Rocky's costume fits into Bryan's theme of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," you'll have to wait and see. The episode will also feature guest star Nicole Richie as Bryan's BFF, and George Takei.

The Halloween episode of "The New Normal," titled "Para-New Normal Activity," airs Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. on NBC.

If you were to dress up as a TV personality, who would it be? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Health Justice Town Hall ? Some Remarks From Dr. Manohar ...

This past Tuesday, CHC took part in the Health Justice Town Hall, which brought people involved in health care across the state of Connecticut together to?discuss current?disparities and how to improve our state system moving forwards. We live-streamed the Town Hall?at our sites in?Middletown and New London, and?CHC?s very own Dr. Manohar shared his thoughts with us following the event?s completion.

Dear Friends,

I am very glad CHC decided to help host this important meeting and I am happy to be able to participate in this experience. It was nice to meet all of you again and sit with Martha Trevey, an APRN who was a resident and rotated through my service during her training. We were both of the same mindset about health care advocacy. The meeting also brought forth some important individuals including Rev Dr. Shelley Best, Theanvy Kuoch ? who spoke from the floor ? and leaders of other key organizations. My friend, Ms. Sue Greeno, also came to participate in Middletown. We worked together during the past few years with the Connecticut Multicultural Health Partnership. Ms. Kuoch also served on the Connecticut Multi-Cultural Health Partnership and she runs a great organization called KHA (Khmer Health Partnership). I was glad to see Dr. Jewel Mullen, the Commissioner of the Department of Public Health, on the panel as well.

The presentations of the panel?members helped provide a glimpse of the lay of the land and a greater appreciation for the challenges that confront all of us in health care.

These are some of the responses:

  1. Disparities in Health care:? A) We must fund the efforts to help health care entities?meet and excel CLAS standards. B) We need to make sure the use of Medical Interpreters is well resourced to?help our friends and neighbors with Limited English proficiency (LEP) to engage effectively in the process of identifying and addressing key health care concerns. C) Use of the Ask Me 3 process to empower our patients to accrue the best outcomes. D) Even without an?LEP barrier that hurts effective health care access and participation in health promoting and disease management processes it is clear that health literacy is a very important factor that is being addressed by individual providers, practices and health care systems. One of the key points that was made is ?health care doesn?t begin or end with the health care providers.?
  2. Zip Code is destiny: A) It became clear that?the great blessing of the affluence of? our state as a whole and the brilliance of the Medical School faculties and the staff of?top ranking health care facilities are not received equally by all of us: address, gender, age, race, and LEP appear to have seriously distorted health care spending and outcomes. Sir Michael Marmot definitively documented the importance of social determinants of health including?occupation, social standing, address, income, race, and gender. B) Housing is also critical. I am very strongly convinced that address is critical to the outcomes accrued to my patients, especially my female patients. It is important that this one goal is focused on in addition to transportation, health care coverage with the help of out care managers of CHC and/or appropriate legal representation. C) The Camden Coalition, established over five years ago in New Jersey, has demonstrated clear advantages of planning and implementing comprehensive continuous non duplicative, safe and effective treatment to high risk, high health care-utilization patients living in apartment complexes. This successful health care reform initiative required Hospitals and other providers of higher intensity interventions to collaborate with ambulatory care providers. D) Additionally, it is important to develop Targeted Areas funding programs that can relocate physicians and medical providers including psychiatrists to areas that meet specific criteria.
  3. Uneven, unfair, duplicative, fragmented, excessive and expensive? care must be addressed. ?This is a major problem; it is the 800 pound Gorilla in the living room. A) ACOs, quality based contracting and changing the reimbursement?mechanisms from paying for individual services provided and paid for in an a la carte manner to a more effective, productive and efficient method based on outcomes for a system of health care even if (especially if) it consists of disparate health care entities as it applies in Middletown, with three major systems. Those being CHC, DMHAS and Middlesex Health Care System and Hospital. B) We need to address Anti-Trust laws that can have a serious adverse effect on plans to develop Quality of Outcomes and processes based contracting among a?group of health care providers. B) Family Medical Home system with ?pod? based teams and integrated comprehensive Electronic Health Record can predictably generate effective, efficient, and satisfying care that also addresses the major problem of ameliorating?and erasing health care disparities from the very first instance/contact and determine the quality and safety of the interventions recommended and implemented for health promotion and disease management. Based on evidence-based guidelines and expectations.
  4. Tort reform: This critical factor affects cost?and delivery of a health care system. Certificates of Merit must be safeguarded and not diluted to prevent frivolous law suits. In SustiNet?s initial iteration when we, all stakeholders including provider associations, clergy, unions and others, worked to override Governor Rell?s veto, contained great components including the frameworks for reducing the impact of legal liability and tort costs. These useful components have been lost because of the sorry fate of SustiNet which went into devolution when the all-in approach was eliminated and costs appeared to be prohibitive and ObamaCare could achieve many of its goals.
  5. PPA-ACA (ObamaCare). The role of exchanges is a very key part of keeping the dream some of us have harbored 12-15 alive of providing sustainable safe and effective as well as efficient health care which bends the curve of such costs. The health care exchange organized by the Connecticut State Medical Society is moving to be in an advantageous position to meet the needs of our neighbors and friends in Connecticut. ?I am?a member of the CSMS and of the legislative/advocacy committee myself.
  6. I hope meetings like these can lead to draft legislation that can be brought up in key committees of the Connecticut Legislature and be supported by specific departments of the executive branch and the OMB. We need to make the most of the input from these meetings.

?Thank you friends, I am appreciative of your support and friendship.

celebrate-world-pasta-day-with-barilla-the ... - Food Family and Finds

Today our family is joining the World Pasta Day celebration by enjoying an easy pasta meal for dinner thanks to the Modern Family Pasta Cookbook (which you can download yourself). It?s full of inspirational recipes and meal planning tips to make week night dinner prep one less hurdle in your life.

I know for our family that meals during the week nights can be a real challenge. My husband gets off work later in the afternoon than they typical 9-5 job so it pushes our dinnertime later into the evening which coincides with baths, story time and bedtime. That?s one of the biggest reasons we eat a lot of pasta dishes. Well, that and because I absolutely love pasta. I have a few different recipes I cycle through when using pasta but I?m always looking for new ideas. The Modern Family Pasta Cookbook includes lots of quick and easy recipes like this one I made that uses Barilla Whole Grain pasta shells and a some basic ingredients including: tomatoes, basil, onions and some Parmesan cheese.

Barilla Whole Grain Pasta Shells with Tomatoes Basil and Parmesan Cheese

How do you feel about Meal Planning and Pasta?

Personally I find my biggest hurdle to planning weeknight meals is a combination of my husband?s work schedule and my constant need to keep up with household chores. I try to help reduce the stress of dinner time cooking by picking meals that take 30 minutes or less to prepare and plan our dinners for later in the evening.

Leading contributors to a hectic lifestyle, making meal-planning and preparation a challenge:

  1. Work
  2. Household chores
  3. Errands
  4. ?Kids? after school activities
  5. Kids? homework

Pasta provides the perfect meal solution for time-limited households:

  • Pasta is recognized by parents and non-parents as a tasty (88%) and easy (87%) meal option and one that can be prepared using on-hand ingredients from a pantry (82%).
  • Other benefits of pasta that help alleviate chaotic schedules include that it is versatile (52%), a quick go-to meal (51%) and allows for multitasking while it?s cooking (44%).

World Pasta Day isn?t just about sharing recipes and time saving tips. It also happens to be a day that you can help others put food on their table. Today only you can visit the Barilla Facebook page and Share A Hug?tab where you can share a virtual hug with friends and Barilla will donate the equivalent of 4 meals to Feeding America. You?ll also get hugged back with a coupon for $1 off Barilla pasta and sauces.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Barilla. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

More International Insurance Map Brewery Fun - A Good Beer Blog

It was the best of times and insurance maps. It was the worst of times, you know, and... insurance maps. Errr. a tale of two cities of sorts, I suppose. From the left we have the Kingston Brewery as well as Portsmouth Brewing of my town from 1908 plus, onward to the right, the Albany Brewing Company, the Beverwick Brewing Company and Taylor Brewing and Malting all of Albany in 1892. What can we learn from these images? Click on each image and find out for yourself. Here is what I see:

? L1: As discussed last August, the Kingston Brewery dates from at least 1791. The badly digitized 1824 map shows a set of buildings on the inland side of the inner harbour road. The 1908 map shows much of the same complex built up overtime. The malt kiln, laid with iron tiles, is no longer used and a lot of space is dedicated to ice houses as part of the lager operations. And there is a manure pit. Dangers which might be faced by fire crews are noted. Where a boiler might be found or a pump. The notes state that hoses are distributed meaning there is water throughout. The basic set up is a courtyard. There is a four story tower as well as a basement with a fermentation room and a stock cellar.

? L2: By comparison, Portsmouth Brewing in is more orderly. Based more about access to the lake than the older cross town competition. The kiln is on the land side of the property and leads into the brewery proper which leads to the bottling room. The coal and barrel sheds are separate. There is a basement and the main building is three stories high. Our commentator Steve Gates, author of The Breweries of Kingston and the St. Lawrence Valley has an excellent photo of the brewery from the next year taken from the vantage of someone under the letter "F" in "Fisher" as shown on the map. He also tells us that they had been brewing lager since 1872. Hence the ice house.

? M: Next, the Albany Brewing Company neatly fills a city block as this picture from the coal shed view of 1865 to 1870 shows. I am sure there is a very good reason that hand grenades were distributed throughout the brewery for fire fighting purposes but I am not sure what that might be. Unlike the Kingston breweries above or Taylor below, there is no access to waterfront. Unlike Beverwick below, there is no train spur leading to the building. To the right center, there is a five story tower where it appears the coolers are located. The office is across the street to the south and a police station to the north. It's in the middle of things. Looks like there are horse stalls near the coal shed that open out on to Green Street to the left of the image.

? R2: The Beverwick Brewing buildings appear to be more modern again. Founded in 1878, it has a rail siding... which apparently leads it to be suitable for a model railway set. The main building looks impressive. Five stories with a sixth in the attic. Brick arched ceilings on multiple floors frame fermenting tubs and beer tubs. Coolers are located in the fifth floor. A more compact footprint but, at 100,000 barrels a year, very productive and, therefore, famous. A very industrial set up compared to the others.

? R1: Last, good old Taylor Brewing in its elder years. The neighbouring buildings have been left vacant with only the core brewery seemingly in operation. Six stories very much oriented towards the river. When I saw this and saw the images of de Hooch yesterday, its position by the water looked like Dutch breweries lined up along the shore in Haarlem in 17th century paintings. I think that's the building to the middle right in the image at Craig's post on the brewery, though that was almost half a century earlier.

What does that tell us? You tell me. I see a range of brewing systems laid showing about 120 years of technological advances. Still plenty of ale brewing going on but a range of transportation methods from horse carts to ships to trains. For the most part, the breweries are all still malting at the turn of the 20th century.

Mark Pincus: Zynga Didn?t Meet Growth Goals Because ?We Didn?t Create Enough New Heat? ? Also, Mobile

Farmville-2In the conference call discussing Zynga's latest earnings report, CEO Mark Pincus acknowledged that the company has not met its own goals for growth, something he blamed on two things ? "game execution" and the growth of mobile. On execution, Pincus said Zynga had struggled to "maintain the historical level of engagement" in its Ville franchise of games: "We didn't create enough new heat for our players by innovating on content and features." He added that the company also failed to release enough new games to offset those declines.

The Communications Network ? Four Steps to Busting Stereotypes ...

Guest Post: ?Alexandra Christy

Are stereotypes about the people you serve getting in the way of achieving your communications goals? All kinds of labels?from ?low-income people,? ?ex-convicts? or even ?climate scientists??can activate negative stereotypes that undermine support for a cause.?So how do you improve public attitudes toward the people you serve? Start by thinking about the four questions below ? all of which can help you focus your strategy to address the real concerns of your audience.

To ground your thinking in a real-world example, I?ve provided some lessons learned from?work the Woodcock Foundation has supported to bust stereotypes of American Muslims (a topic we explored during a session titled,?The Art and Science of Strategic Storytelling: Disrupting Stereotypes of American Muslims,?at?the recent Communications Network Conference ?in Seattle).

1.?What does the audience currently feel about the people involved?and what do you want them to feel?

In the case of American Muslims, research revealed that the public is fearful that American Muslims are associated with terrorists and not loyal to the country. Because the audience is currently in a state of fear, our message must first make them feel safe.

?In order to accomplish that, we have to deliver a message that connects treating American Muslims fairly to safety?not simply ?fairness? because it?s the ?right? thing to do. One message along these lines that tested especially well in a national survey: ?Target terrorists based on evidence, not an entire group of people based on their religion. That targeted approach is more effective at keeping us safe.?

2.?What are the misperceptions about the people involved?and what does the audience not know that would make them feel more positively?

In focus group after focus group we conducted on this issue, the audience commonly misperceived all American Muslims to be recent immigrants, which brought with it many anti-immigrant feelings commonly harbored toward other ?immigrant? groups. This perception bears out in polling as well?and what?s worse, American Muslims are viewed as immigrants that don?t share American values. Close to a majority of the public believes that ?the values of Islam are incompatible with American values.?

Interestingly, while the audience widely believed all Muslims were immigrants, they didn?t have a narrative in their heads about why Muslims come to America. Through our research, we uncovered that hearing heritage stories about Muslims who came to America for positive reasons?to seek opportunity or to make a better life for their families?helped to address (anti-) immigrant stereotypes and replace them with a narrative about the positive contributions American Muslims make to our country.

3.?What would surprise the audience about the people involved?

If the broadly held misperception is that all Muslims are immigrants, it?s actually a revelation to most people that American Muslims are American. In focus groups we conducted, just switching the order of two words??Muslim American? to ?American Muslim??evoked more positive feelings. When the word Muslim came first, it suggested to the audience that the person valued their religion above the country. When the word American came first, it suggested that the person was a citizen, loyal to the country, shared their values and contributed to society.

5.?What value do you want to activate?

Even if we succeed in busting stereotypes and make the public feel more positively toward American Muslims, many non-Muslims will always view someone who is Muslim as different?that?s just a fact. To get our audience over that final hump, we have to appeal to the deeply held American value of treating everyone with respect?even those who are different.

Election's other crystal balls: Football, baseball, basketball

Washington (CNN) ?

Why invest in polling and television ads, when rooting for a few oddly dispersed teams can lead to presidential victory?

Election watchers have been looking for correlations between sports and the presidency for years. A few have been found, explaining why challengers should root for the Washington Redskins, Democrats should root for the National League baseball teams and Republicans should cheer for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The most well known sports related presidential predictor is the Redskin's Rule. The rule is simple: if the Redskins lose, the challenger wins; if the Redskins win, the incumbent wins. Since 1940 (the 'skins moved to Washington in 1937), the outcome of the Redskins last home game before the election has correctly predicted the outcome of the presidential election 17 out of 18 times.

The Redskins play the Carolina Panthers at home on November 4, just two days before the election.

If you believe the rule, Obama will be cheering for the Redskins and Romney will be cheering for the Panthers.

Major League Baseball, in a press release, noted another correlation from the twenty-six World Series played since 1908, albeit a less reliable one.

About three-fifths (59%) of the time that the American League team won the World Series, the Republican candidate won the White House. Likewise, 67% of the time that the National League won the World Series, the Democrat won the White House.

After a long season, the National League's San Francisco Giants will face off against the American League's Detroit Tigers in the World Series starting on Wednesday. If the odds hold, Romney - a native of Michigan - will be pulling for the team from Detroit, while Obama will be pulling for the Giants.

Though not totally accurate, this theory has correctly predicted the last three elections.

But that is not all - the United States is more sports and politics obsessed than just two theories.

Windows 8 launch centre

The launch of Microsoft's Windows 8 is arguably the biggest tech event of the year. It represents a huge change in direction for the world's most popular computer operating system, a change that some of Microsoft's loyal fans may find disconcerting. Never fear ? CNET is here to guide you through every step of upgrading, with a comprehensive look at what's news and which updated touchscreen models make the most of the new Windows 8 experience.

  • Microsoft makes an aggressive, forward-thinking and bold statement for the future of PCs with Windows 8, and the vast security and speed improvements more than justify the US$40 upgrade price.

  • The "lite" version of Windows 8, known as Windows RT, remains the biggest unknown for many coming to the new OS. Here's our guide to what Windows RT is, how it's different from Windows 8 and WinRT, and what it all means.

  • The ARM-powered version of Microsoft's own tablet, the Surface RT, will likely make waves, especially amongst Microsoft's partners.

  • Microsoft today announced Australian pricing for the upcoming Surface tablet with Windows RT, and is now taking pre-orders.

  • If you're planning on upgrading your PC to Windows 8, but you're not forking out for a new touchscreen computer, it's time to learn the keyboard shortcuts.

  • The Acer Aspire S7 is one of the sharpest-looking laptops of 2012. It runs well, but it may be priced beyond the reach of regular laptop shoppers.

  • We'll be interested to see whether Samsung's Windows 8 Ativ line, announced at IFA this year, makes it to the land down under.

  • Samsung has updated its Series 5 Ultra from earlier in the year, adding a touchscreen in readiness for the launch of Windows 8.

  • Lenovo offers up a Windows 8 tablet that runs the full version of the new operating system, with an IPS display and an Atom processor.

  • Formerly known as the XPS Duo 12, the XPS 12 is unique amongst its hybrid laptop peers as it uses a flip-screen mechanism.

  • Taking cues from Asus' Transformer series, Samsung offers its take on the hybrid laptop/tablet.

  • HP's top-of-the-line Spectre is getting a touchscreen update and Thunderbolt for Windows 8.

  • Part laptop, part tablet, HP's Envy x2 is a Windows 8-based hybrid laptop running an Intel Atom processor.

  • Android users looking for a cloud storage and file-syncing solution now have a new option in SkyDrive. But is Microsoft's offering on par with the tried-and-true Google Drive?

  • Expect to pay just under US$100 per copy for the consumer version if you're a smaller OEM or putting together a home-brew PC, according to the latest scuttlebutt.

  • The Chinese PC giant touted "convertibles" during a New York event. No, not cars, but laptops that can be switched into tablets.

  • The tech giant is making a major departure from its earlier operating systems, and now must teach people how to use its new OS. Leaked training videos show just how Microsoft intends to do that.

  • The software giant sets its sights on Spotify, making its new streaming music service the default way to hear tunes in Windows 8. The service will extend to mobile phones and its video-game console.

  • Xbox 360 owners will be able to control the console through their smartphones and tablets via the new SmartGlass app.

My Garage Sale Treasure | TBN Ranch

It?s hard to keep everything in its place when not everything has a place. Clutter is not my friend and I spend way too much time fighting what seems an endless battle. I?m not a saver, I collect nothing, and in most cases, anything I haven?t used in a year is classified as something I don?t need and pitched in the trash. But that doesn?t seem to matter on our little farm, in order to make chores convenient, things have to be easily assessable. That means feed cans, tools, and a billion other things end up on my back porch as one big ugly eyesore.

Somehow unsightly stuff that is organized in it?s own special place is okay. I call this organized clutter, and I?ve been on an endless journey to find an affordable way to neatly put this stuff somewhere for years. Of course something large enough and still attractive is always way over budget? until Saturday, my lucky day! Right down the road was the answer I?ve been looking for at garage sale. There it was, the same shed I?ve been wanting forever, and this time it wasn?t hundreds of dollars!? I offered $75 for it and now it?s mine all mine!

I feel silly that something like a storage shed can make me so happy, but it did. Here it is?? my garage sale treasure!

Life is good. :)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will be sitting down with Jay Leno on the set of "The Tonight Show" Wednesday, less than two weeks before Election Day.

NBC says Wednesday night's appearance will be Obama's fifth on "The Tonight Show," his third since he became president.

Obama has been making the late-night rounds as the presidential campaign has picked up steam. He was on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" last month, and chatted with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" last week.

Mitt Romney has avoided the late-night talk shows since he became the Republican party's presidential nominee. But his wife, Ann, did appear on "The Tonight Show" last month.

HBT: Game 7 favors the Giants

With their backs against the wall, the Giants have been unstoppable this month, winning five straight elimination games against the Reds and Cardinals.

It?s an impressive streak, no doubt. The Cardinals would likely be the first to admit it. After all, they?re riding a streak of six straight wins in elimination games themselves.

Now one of those streaks is bound to come to an end on Monday. Or perhaps Tuesday, since the forecast for Monday evening is pretty grim.

The Giants? key for Game 7 is obvious: they need ace Matt Cain to come out and match the starts put up by Barry Zito and Ryan Vogelsong in the last two games. Cain?s looked more like a No. 3 than a No. 1 so far this month, giving up exactly three runs in all three of his starts. It?s left him 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA. That?s quite a change from the last two months of the season, when Cain allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of 12 outings.

The Cardinals probably don?t need quite so much from fellow 16-game winner Kyle Lohse, not with Trevor Rosenthal and Jason Motte both ready to pitch up two innings in relief. Lohse, though, is definitely the guy they want out there. He?s 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA in his three postseason starts. He outdueled Cain in Wednesday?s Game 3, a 3-1 victory for the Cardinals in St. Louis.

The guess here is that Cain is due. The same goes for likely NL MVP Buster Posey. And while the Giants? best relievers don?t match Cardinals? huge arms, they?ve been plenty effective to date.

Of course, everyone who has come away doubting Lohse lately has been made to look foolish. At the very least, he always keeps it close. The Cardinals are 23-13 in Lohse?s starts this year. Of the 13 losses, nine were by one run, three were by two runs and one was by three runs (May 30 against the Braves).

humans?. ? Julie Greene's Blog: This Hunger Is Secret

I didn?t want to go to church this morning. ?I had a nagging feeling that I should not go. Like the feeling you have before something really bad happens. ?A premonition.

I got there, and something happened that was yucky. Something that ticked me off. ?I had no way of expressing this to anyone, so I kept my mouth shut. ?It had nothing to do with the content of today?s sermon, which I could barely think about, anyway.

There was a meeting afterward. I stayed for it, then I went home after quite a bit of socializing. ?I felt like a fake. ?I didn?t say anything in the meeting. ?While walking home, I felt like crying, but I didn?t. ?I don?t want to go back next week. ?Just don?t want to be there anymore. ?Never mind why.

I earned my BFA from Emerson College in Writing, Literature, and Publishing in 2003 and my MFA in Creative Writing in 2009 from Goddard College. I am an an activist for people with eating disorders, and have had 32 years experience living with an eating disorder and other mental diseases. I believe that people with eating disorders are a neglected population faced with ignorance and discrimination by those in the medical and mental health field. Billions of dollars in research is being poured into "brain" illnesses--schizophrenia, bipolar, major depression--while eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa remain the most potentially fatal of all mental illnesses. As an activist, I believe eating disorders care should be accessible to all. This means that eating disorders practitioners and care centers need to STOP their discrimination NOW against people who are not female. This means they need to start accepting people who are on public assistance or are uninsured and start offering free care to many, and assistance to homeless people. This means they need to open their doors to people at any age, no matter how long they have suffered. This means care centers and practitioners' offices need to be fully ADA compliant. I intend to pursue the need for more research of populations considered minority, especially men and boys of all ages. I believe there need to be more treatment options for sufferers and their families. Right now, there are pathetically few choices as far as I can see, and most see the "team" approach as the only option, which is not even an option for someone who is impoverished, and sadly, hungry. I also believe that we, people with eating disorders, need to bring out our story, in detail and without censoring one word, to the world, and speak out on what it is like to struggle every day with eating and related issues. So much of our lives have been lived in secret and in silence. Our voices need to be heard. I hope to encourage and help people to write their stories. You start by writing the first word. I am available to do readings in the Boston area and to speak about eating disorders and mental illness. Please contact me at julie@juliegreene.net.

4 success attributes for today's workplace ? Get In Front ...

As quickly as our world is changing, many things remain the same. Yes, TV has morphed into tablets and small screens. Telephones are now for texting. Networking is all about LinkedIn.?

But many of our everyday business activities are timeless. Technology may come into play, but it can?t replace the human factor of collaboration, confidence, caring,?and checking.????

Collaboration: ?When it comes to collaboration, people are your best resource.? That?s according to CNBC.com?s Donny Deutsch.??He says collaboration trumps competition in our new business landscape. Deutsch explains that it takes courage to move from the self-serving, ?What?s in it for me?? mentality to a shared sense of purpose, or ?we? mentality.??Another important aspect of collaboration is trust, which Deutsch maintains brings about a framework for free thinking. These days, open dialogues that invite diversity trump top-down directives.????

Confidence: Today?s employees and managers alike?must exude confidence in their organizations, work ethic,?talents, and?decisions. They must believe in themselves. Not too much pressure, right? First-class?leaders understand the fine line between confidence and arrogance. Somewhere in the middle lies humility. These are timeless human attributes that technology can?t touch. And rightfully so. ???

Caring: Real?professionals know that a sense of compassion?is needed when interacting with others. If you haven?t learned about Emotional Intelligence and how to get along with others, it?s time to get started. A study from U.S. News & World Report found that 90 percent of people are fired because of poor attitudes. Only 10 percent?lose their jobs due to lack of skill or ability.?

Checking: This is not about direct deposits and bank routing numbers. This is about checking and verifying sources when writing blog posts and reports. It?s about?checking in with co-workers?who may be having a rough time.?It?s about checking?opportunities to learn new skills and technology.?The most important checking you will likely do: ?Checking your attitude.
