US government will declassify Yahoo documents and court decision by September

DNP US government will declassify Yahoo FISA documents by September

Earlier this month, the US government was put in the hot seat with regards to the Justice Department's 2008 battle with Yahoo over its request for user data. Yahoo fought the PRISM demand and ultimately lost; five years later, we're finally going to be able to see the court decision that's been kept under lock and key since then. The clock is ticking for the federal government, as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has set a September deadline for unveiling those classified documents. While this might be a victory for transparency, it's important to remember that declassification doesn't necessarily mean full disclosure. The government will still have the option to redact certain portions of text that it feels must remain classified. Considering its reticence to share the information in the first place, we can probably expect to see a liberal distribution of those pesky black rectangles.

Fermilab Hunts Rare Subatomic Particles With This 50-Foot Electromagnet

Just because Fermilab shut off its famous Tevartron back in 2011 doesn't mean the entire facility closed down with it. In fact, the Chicago-area physics lab is embarking on an auspicious plan to develop some of the world's most powerful proton beam technology by the end of the decade. But first, researchers have to install a 50-foot diameter electromagnet shipped in from 3,000 miles away and unlock the secret lives of elusive subatomic particles. No sweat, right?

Police: Woman arrested in DC cathedral vandalism

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A woman was arrested Monday after green paint was found splattered inside two chapels at the Washington National Cathedral, and police were investigating her in connection with two similar incidents on the National Mall, authorities said.

The woman was arrested in the area of the cathedral shortly after the paint was found, Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said. Investigators were hoping to question her about the vandalism on the Mall, including at the Lincoln Memorial, but a language barrier delayed the interrogation, Newsham said.

The woman would likely be charged with destruction of property, Newsham said.

Green paint was found early Friday morning on the Lincoln Memorial, and symbols were found painted in green later Friday on another statue on the Mall. The Lincoln Memorial was closed temporarily but reopened later Friday.

Officials at the cathedral discovered the paint inside two chapels Monday afternoon. It was still wet, which led them to believe the vandalism had just occurred. Officials called police immediately and closed the cathedral to visitors while authorities searched the grounds.

The paint was splashed onto an organ and on the floor inside the cathedral's historic Bethlehem Chapel on the basement level, officials said. It was also found inside Children's Chapel in the nave of the cathedral.

Also Monday, U.S. Park Police said green paint was found on the statue of Joseph Henry outside the headquarters of the Smithsonian Institution on the Mall. Henry was the Smithsonian's first secretary.

Meanwhile, crews continued working Monday to remove the paint from the Lincoln Memorial. The National Park Service said progressively stronger substances would be used until all the paint is gone, which could take several days. The memorial was scheduled to be power washed Tuesday.

Sgt. Paul Brooks, a U.S. Park Police spokesman, said it was too early to tell whether the same person was responsible for the vandalism at the two Mall landmarks. He noted that while the paint appeared to be splattered indiscriminately on the memorial, the statue appeared to have been deliberately painted. The symbols on the statue were not immediately decipherable.

Bethlehem Chapel has surveillance cameras, but it wasn't immediately clear whether the vandalism was captured on video, said Richard Weinberg, a cathedral spokesman.

D.C. police said paint from the cathedral would likely be sent to the FBI for testing.

Bethlehem Chapel was opened in 1912 and is the oldest section of the cathedral. It was the site of President Woodrow Wilson's burial rites, and his remains were entombed there for more than three decades. Wilson's remains were later interred in a memorial bay on the cathedral's main level.

Washington National Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral that serves as the nation's spiritual home. It has hosted inaugural prayer services and the state funerals for presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

Musician JJ Cale dies; wrote Clapton, Skynyrd hits

If musicians were measured not by the number of records they sold but by the number of peers they influenced, JJ Cale would have been a towering figure in 1970s rock 'n' roll.

His best songs like "After Midnight," ''Cocaine" and "Call Me the Breeze" were towering hits ? for other artists. Eric Clapton took "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" and turned them into the kind of hard-party anthems that defined rock for a long period of time. And Lynyrd Skynyrd took the easy-shuffling "Breeze" and supercharged it with a three-guitar attack that made it a hit.

Cale, the singer-songwriter and producer known as the main architect of the Tulsa Sound, passed away Friday night at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. His manager, Mike Kappus, said Cale died of a heart attack. He was 74.

While his best known songs remain in heavy rotation on the radio nearly 40 years later, most folks wouldn't be able to name Cale as their author. That was a role he had no problem with.

"No, it doesn't bother me," Cale said with a laugh in an interview posted on his website. "What's really nice is when you get a check in the mail."

And the checks rolled in for decades. The list of artists who covered his music or cite him as a direct influence reads like a who's who of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ? Clapton, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Mark Knopfler, The Allman Brothers, Carlos Santana, Captain Beefheart and Bryan Ferry among many others.

Young said in Jimmy McDonough's biography "Shakey" that Cale and Jimi Hendrix were the best guitar players he had ever heard. And in his recent memoir "Waging Heavy Peace," Young said Cale's "Crazy Mama" ? his biggest hit, rising to No. 22 on the Billboard singles chart ? was one of the five songs that most influenced him as a songwriter: "The song is true, simple, and direct, and the delivery is very natural. JJ's guitar playing is a huge influence on me. His touch is unspeakable."

It was Clapton who forged the closest relationship with Cale. They were in sync musically and personally. Clapton also recorded Cale songs "Travelin' Light" and "I'll Make Love To You Anytime" and included the Cale composition "Angel" on his most recent album, "Old Sock." Other songs like "Layla" didn't involve Cale, but clearly owe him a debt. The two also collaborated together on "The Road to Escondido," which won the Grammy Award for best contemporary blues album in 2008.

Clapton once told Vanity Fair that Cale was the living person he most admired, and Cale weighed the impact Clapton had on his life in a 2006 interview with The Associated Press: "I'd probably be selling shoes today if it wasn't for Eric."

That quote was typical of the always humble Cale. But while Clapton was already a star when he began mining Cale's catalog, there's no doubt the music they shared cemented his "Clapton is God" status and defined the second half of his career.

"As hard as I've tried I've never really succeeded in getting a record to sound like him and that's what I want," Clapton said in a "Fast Focus" video interview to promote "Escondido." ''Before I go under the ground, I want to make a JJ Cale album with him at the helm."

Clapton described Cale's music as "a strange hybrid. It's not really blues, it's not really folk or country or rock 'n' roll. It's somewhere in the middle."

Cale arrived at that intersection by birth. Born John Weldon Cale in Oklahoma City, he was raised in Tulsa. Buffeted by country and western on one side and the blues on the other, Oklahoma offered a melting pot of styles. Cale leaned on those styles as he spent his formative years in Los Angeles and Nashville, but he also used drum machines and often acted as his own producer, engineer and session player. He'd bury his own whispery vocals in the mix, causing the listener to lean in and focus.

"I think it goes back to me being a recording mixer and engineer," Cale said in a 2009 biography on his website. "Because of all the technology now you can make music yourself and a lot of people are doing that now. I started out doing that a long time ago and I found when I did that I came up with a unique sound."

Rumour: Apple drops iPhone 5 after launch iPhone Lite and iPhone 5S?

Texas oilman, fracking pioneer Mitchell dies at 94

HOUSTON (AP) ? George P. Mitchell leveraged a penchant for hard work, an appetite for risk and dogged persistence in the face of futility into a technological breakthrough that reshaped the global energy industry and made the wildcat oilman a billionaire.

Mitchell, the developer and philanthropist who also is considered the father of fracking, doggedly pursued natural gas he and others knew were trapped in wide, thin layers of rock deep underground. Fracking brought an entirely new ? and enormous ? trove of oil and gas within reach.

Mitchell died Friday at age 94 his home in Galveston, his family said.

The son of a Greek immigrant who ran a cleaning and shoeshine business in Galveston, Mitchell became one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. While his technological breakthrough transformed economies in states like North Dakota, Texas and Pennsylvania and is expected to migrate around the world, many environmentalists have attacked the practice over concerns about air and water pollution.

For the entire oil and gas age, drillers had searched for hydrocarbons that had seeped out of layers of sedimentary rock over millions of years and collected into large pools. Once found, they were easy to produce. Engineers merely had to drill into the pools and the natural pressure of the earth would send huge volumes of oil and gas up to the surface.

These pools are exceedingly rare, though, and they were quickly being tapped out as the world's consumption grew, raising fears that the end of the oil and gas age would soon be at hand and raising prices to alarming levels.

Mitchell's idea: Go directly to the sedimentary rock holding the oil and gas, essentially speeding up geological processes by thousands of millennia.

He figured out how to drill into and then along layers of gas-laden rock, then force a slurry of water, sand and chemicals under high pressure into the rock to crack it open and release the hydrocarbons. This process, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, is the now-common industry practice known generally as fracking.

Engineers after Mitchell learned to adapt the process to oil-bearing rock. The U.S. is now the world's largest producer of natural gas and is on track to overtake Saudi Arabia as the world's biggest oil producer by the end of the decade, according to the International Energy Agency.

Daniel Yergin, the energy historian and author of "The Quest: Energy, Security and the Remaking of the Modern World" said in a statement that Mitchell "Changed the world energy outlook in the 21st century and set in motion the global rebalancing of oil and gas that is now occurring."

The fracking boom sent natural gas prices plummeting, reducing energy costs for U.S. consumers and businesses. And by boosting U.S. oil production, it has sharply reduced oil imports.

Electric utilities used more natural gas to generate power because of its low price, while reducing the use of coal. This has led to a substantial reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide and toxic chemicals such as mercury by U.S. utilities.

But the practice has also sparked powerful antagonism, especially in the Northeast, from residents and environmentalists opposed to increased industrial activity in rural areas and concerned that the fracking process or the wastewater it generates can contaminate drinking water supplies.

New York, which is thought to have considerable natural gas resources, has imposed a moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing and star-studded activist groups have staged countless rallies and events to generate opposition to the practice.

In some areas fracking has been blamed for air pollution and gas leaks that have ruined well water, but the Obama administration and many state regulators say the practice is safe when done properly.

Mitchell's family, on the family foundation website, said he died of natural causes while surrounded by relatives.

"His story was quintessentially American," the family statement said. "George P. Mitchell was raised as a child of meager means who, throughout his life, believed in giving back to the community that made his success possible and lending a hand to the less fortunate struggling to reach their potential."

George Phydias Mitchell and his wife, Cynthia, who died in 2009, had 10 children. Their work together was "dedicated to making the world a more hospitable and sustainable place," the family said.

Mitchell graduated first in his class of 1940 at Texas A&M University with degrees in petrochemical engineering and geology. He helped pay for his school costs by running a tailoring and laundry business in College Station and selling candy and stationery to his fellow student Aggies, then in later years became the school's largest benefactor with donations topping $95 million.

This year, the annual Forbes list of wealthiest Americans ranked him 239th with a net worth of $2 billion.

Mitchell spent four years in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Afterward, he struck out on his own with a brother and a partner as a wildcatter operation.

Over his career, he participated in drilling some 10,000 wells, including more than 1,000 wildcats ? wells drilled away from known fields. His company, Mitchell Energy & Development, was credited with more than 200 oil and 350 natural gas discoveries.

The firm spent nearly two decades developing horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, finally finding success in North Texas' Barnett Shale formation in the 1990s.

"There's no point in mincing words. Some people thought it was stupid," Dan Steward, a geologist who began working with the Texas natural gas firm Mitchell Energy in 1981 told The Associated Press in an interview last year. Steward estimated in the early years, "probably 90 percent of the people" in the firm didn't believe shale gas would be profitable, and that Mitchell's company didn't even cover the cost of fracking on shale tests until the 36th well was drilled.

But he credited the company namesake as a tenacious visionary.

"There's not a lot of companies that would stay with something this long," he said. "Most companies would have given up."

"Because of Mitchell's persistence ... we are today witnessing an unprecedented boom in domestic energy production and the associated economic benefits in Texas and nationwide," Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman agreed Friday.

Mitchell sold his energy company in 2002 for $3.1 billion.

Over the years, he spent tens of millions rebuilding his hometown of Galveston, resurrecting a long-dormant annual Mardi Gras celebration and providing money to restore the city's historic downtown Strand District.

He donated the land for Texas A&M University at Galveston.

"To say he was a great man with foresight and generosity isn't enough," Adm. Robert Smith III, the school's president, said. "His contributions to this university literally made this institution possible."

His Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, founded in 1979, has made more than $400 million in gifts.

In the early 1970s, Mitchell began developing The Woodlands, a suburban Houston master-planned community designed as a place for mixed-income residential development with jobs and amenities nearby while preserving the East Texas forest and other natural resources that covered the 27,000 acres. He later would call it his most satisfying achievement.

The Woodlands is now home to about 100,000 people, and one of the nation's busiest outdoor performing arts and entertainment venues there carries his wife's name, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

"His ambition and success have transformed our region," Houston Mayor Annise Parker said. "He was a visionary, and showed his love for Houston through his work and hometown pride."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately released.

The Pegboard Wall Workspace

The Pegboard Wall Workspace

Pegboards are wonderful tools for organizing all sorts of things. You can even use one to upgrade one wall of your office for a display and accessorizing system you can easily switch up whenever you want.

Flickr user travisdodson doesn't have much on his wall (though in the back you can see a room full of gear neatly organized on a pegboard). Still, it's not hard to see how you could hang clipboards, photo frames, accessories for your many computers, and even plants on that versatile wall.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, share them with us by: a) posting it in the discussion below, attaching your image to the post, b) posting it to your personal Kinja blog using the tag featured workspace, or c) adding it to ourLifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Flickr pool. Make sure any photos you include are at least 640x360. Keeping them to 16:9 helps, too! Include a little text about the stuff you used, how you came up with the design, and any other relevant details. If your clever organization and good design sense catches our eye, you might be the next featured workspace.

The Numerous Reasons for Migraine Headaches - Health and Fitness

Headaches may be terribly debilitating, and it is something most of us have had the misfortune to endure. But needless to say there are headaches, and then you can get migraine headaches which are different. Actually, I used to have migraines when I was really young but they stopped. I no longer have them, but I can tell you they are tremendously painful experiences. There is much to be discovered about migraines because they aren't fully understood by researchers. There are numerous reasons for this not the very least of which is people can experience and feel pain in various ways. But there is much more to this story which is complicated and has many pieces to it.

As you can imagine, there is actually a great deal of information gathered over the years. This kind of headache is occasionally referred to as a vascular headache. For one thing, there are some who can experience a migraine if they're subject to significant temperatures of either hot or cold. Then there are persons who can get this type of headache if they experience substantial sleep loss or too much hunger. Just like with so many other medical problems, there are certain triggers that apparently influence this condition. Stress is a variable with many other men and women, and perhaps particularly if it is prolonged stress.

There continues to be research regarding the special attributes of migraines such as the fact they build more gradually than other headaches. However, that is just an additional clue related to migraines, but each and every piece of the puzzle helps. Every bit of knowledge can offer some kind of clue. There may also be a genetic component involved, however that would not seem to include all migraine sufferers. That does point to other possible causes such as external influences that produce the same effect.

For women, there can be a connection with hormone variations and migraines. In fact, cases of migraines have been noted during the times just before or after the menstrual cycle happens. It is acknowledged that estrogen diminishes quite a bit during those periods of time. Further periods of hormone variations involve menopause and certainly pregnancy. A number of women will likely have a more significant frequency of migraine problems during these periods. It could be useful to note that the treatment known as HRT, hormonal replacement therapy, can make migraines more painful than they already are. Alternatively, all of those experiences do not happen to all women who suffer from migraines.

There are quite a few other variables involved that may result in a migraine including sensory arousal such as loud sounds, particular odors, bright lights and an assortment of smells like perfumes and other various odors. It is distinct that the range of migraine triggers is highly diverse. Still there are physical factors with some people including intense physical exertion of pretty much any kind. So there is still a long way to go before this ailment is understood and properly treated.

Coach Malhotra will focus on team spirit

Calcutta: Ashok Malhotra is the new Bengal coach. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Jagmohan Dalmiya, on Monday, announced at an informal media conference that the former Bengal captain has been given a two-year contract. Malhotra replaces Woorkeri Raman who was at the helm since 2010-11 season.

?We had shortlisted quite a few names? But we thought Ashok Malhotra has the credentials. He is as good as Raman. He starts from September 1,? Dalmiya said.

Malhotra said the job would be a challenging one. ?Challenging definitely but I am ready for the job. I am excited and looking ahead to this new assignment. Bengal haven?t been doing well of late. I see no reason why a team of Bengal?s calibre should fare so badly. We have to be competitive,? Malhotra said.

A Level III coach, the 56-year-old Malhotra has coached India A.

Known as a tough task master, Malhotra said his primary focus would be to ensure the dressing room was happy. ?If the dressing room is happy everything will fall into place. The advantage is in the dressing room the coach will speak in Bengali. From my personal experience, I have seen if you interact in mother tongue, then the players open up easily. That?s very important.

?Being friendly with the players helps. We have to move as one unit. A coach?s job is man management and giving confidence to players who are going through a slump in form.?

Malhotra, who played seven Tests for India and also featured in 20 ODIs, said he would be banking on the seniors like Manoj Tiwary, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Wriddhiman Saha. ?Manoj will be out for early part of the season. But once he is back he will deliver. My main worry is the spin department. We have a good bunch of pace bowlers but the spin attack is very weak. So my primary focus will be to build a good spin department.?

Talking about Laxmi, he said the senior pro made his India debut when he was the national selector way back in 1999. ?He is a winner and so am I... That means we will be on the same page.?

Laxmi also was excited with Malhotra?s appointment. ?It is really pleasing to hear that Ashok Sir will be our new coach. I have always shared a very cordial relationship with him and am really glad that we?ll be able to work with him.?

As a commentator Malhotra has been scathing in his attack but now he would be on the other side of the fence. ?Well for nine years I have criticised the players but now I am ready to face the music.?

Malhotra said he would be happy if Kapil Dev agrees to have a session with the pace bowlers. ?That will be excellent. But Kapil has a very busy schedule and I have to see whether he could squeeze out some time.? Malhotra is also ready to take help from Sourav Ganguly too.

Textbook publishers revamp ebooks to fight used market

A booming market in recent years for selling and renting used college textbooks has saved students across the United States a ton of cash.

But it has put textbook publishers in a bind. They don't make a cent unless students buy their books new.

So increasingly, publishers like Pearson and McGraw-Hill Education are turning to a new model: Creating online versions of their texts, often loaded with interactive features, and selling students access codes that expire at semester's end.

Publishers save on printing, shipping and process returns. The ebooks are good for learning and good for their bottom line. There's just one catch: Persuading students to go digital isn't easy.

Online products accounted for 27 percent of the $12.4 billion spent on textbooks for secondary schools and colleges in the United States last year, according to research firm Outsell.

But the publishers expect that percentage to grow, and are retooling their businesses to compete in what they see as the future of the industry.

Half of Pearson's total revenue last year came from digital products and services (not all of which are digital), and executives expect that to increase. The company recently announced a restructuring to emphasize online content.

Cengage Learning, which creates customized courses, has pledged to emerge from a recent bankruptcy filing more focused on digital. McGraw-Hill Education, which was recently acquired by private equity firm Apollo Global Management, has taken an equity stake in one software company focused on digital learning and purchased another outright.

Still, the transition will not be immediate, executives said. Students have to learn to adapt to a textbook that can almost read their minds.

"How do we get from the Old World to the New World as quickly as possible?" said Andrew Kvaal, a senior vice president for Cengage. "An awful lot of people still resonate with having a physical book in front of them."

Some 77 percent of college students said they preferred print to e-books in a survey conducted last year by the National Association of College Stores. Another survey, by the research firm Student Monitor, found only 14 percent of students enrolled in college this past spring had classes that required online texts and just 2 percent bought most of their books in digital format.

And most students said they did not see much use for the touted special features of digital textbooks, such as embedded quizzes, electronic flash cards, or the ability to share notes online.

Michael Hardison, who is studying political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is among the skeptics. He likes straight-forward e-books, but said textbook software with built-in tutorials made him feel that he was being spoon-fed the information instead of letting him wrestle with the material on his own.

Cost is another concern for many students.

Consider the widely used textbook, "Biology", by Sylvia Mader and Michael Windelspecht, published by McGraw-Hill. The ebook costs $120, a steep discount from the $229 cost for a new print textbook.

But savvy shoppers do better. The same book in printed form can be rented for $36. It can also be bought used for $102, and later resold on the secondhand market for up to $95, according to the website CheapestTextbooks.com.

These alternative markets have transformed the industry. Average student spending on new textbooks per semester dropped from $192 in the fall of 2008 to $138 this spring, according to Student Monitor. That is despite the prices of new textbooks rising about 6 percent a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Digital textbooks could hurt the secondhand market, analysts said. But they will have to contend with open-source sites ? free or almost-free compilations of resources that are only a small threat now ? and students sharing files rather than buying their own.

With online books, publishing companies "get a steady stream of revenue," said Will Ethridge, the outgoing chief executive of Pearson's North America division. "It's a better model for students, a better model for the business and a better model for the environment."

The transition "obviously doesn't happen overnight," he said, "but we do think the direction is very clear."

Executives say students might be wary at first, but once they try the new software, they are hooked.

McGraw-Hill's LearnSmart software ? which serves almost as a personal tutor, guiding students through e-books ? debuted in 2010 with just 150,000 student users. Two years later, more than a million students were paying $25 to $35 per course to access the online tutor, which they purchase separately from the online textbook itself. Executives say sales are expected to rise again this year.

Some digital texts embed links to videos, articles and clips from a professor's lectures, while others will monitor a student's progress and draw up personalized study plans to keep them on track.

"We can even predict what you're most likely to forget ... and when you're most likely to forget it," said Jeff Livingston, a senior vice president at McGraw-Hill Education.

Manju Bhat, an assistant professor of physiology at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, monitors how much time his students spend reading the digital texts he assigns, how they do on embedded quizzes, and which concepts stump them. Bhat, a paid consultant to McGraw-Hill, uses that data to shape the next day's lesson.

The students' grades improved so much that "My department chairwoman called me into her office and asked me, 'What did you do?'" Bhat said.

There is another advantage of online texts: They can be edited and updated quickly, with new material pushed out to all users around the world.

"Ten years from now, almost 75 percent of students believe that e-textbooks will be used more than print textbooks," said Cindy Clarke, a senior vice president for CourseSmart, an online joint venture of five textbook publishers. "It's happening, and I believe it will start to happen more and more exponentially."

South Sudan to shut down oil industry next week

JUBA, South Sudan --?

South Sudan's oil minister said Tuesday the country would shut down its oil production by next week ahead of the deadline Sudan set for companies in its territory to stop receiving South Sudan's crude.

The stoppage ? a crippling blow to South Sudan's government budget ? will be the second shut-down of the country's only real industry since South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan in July 2011. The stoppages are evidence of the lingering bad blood between two countries that fought a decades-long civil war.

Sudan notified South Sudan in June of its intention to stop receiving, processing and transporting South Sudan's crude within two months. Khartoum says it will only allow Juba to transport its crude through Sudanese territory if South Sudan stops supporting rebels fighting to topple the government in Khartoum.

South Sudan has repeatedly denied supporting SPLM-North rebels and in turn accuses Khartoum of supporting rebels in South Sudan led by David Yau Yau.

South Sudan derives almost all its government budget from the oil industry, but the south's oil can only be shipped to market via Sudan's pipelines.

Dau said South Sudan was shutting down its oil industry early to avoid any equipment or environmental damage that could be caused if Khartoum implements a unilateral shut-down.

Reduction of oil production in South Sudan began July 16, Dau said. Sudan ordered its oil companies to stop receiving crude by Aug. 7.

Most of South Sudan's oil is produced in Upper Nile state, where 200,000 barrels are pumped per day. By Monday, that figure had been reduced to 100,000 barrels per day, said Mawien Makol Arik, a spokesman in South Sudan's foreign affairs ministry.

South Sudan shut down its oil industry in January 2012 after accusing Sudan of stealing some of its oil. The south didn't resume oil production until April of this year. From that April re-start until its shutdown next week the nation will have pumped 6.4 million barrels worth around $500 million, Dau said.

When asked if he raps during practice, Baylor head coach Art Briles answers with a lyric by Drake

Art Briles can rap? Who knew? (Michael Ainsworth/The Dallas Morning News)

Art Briles is an easy going guy, plain and simple. He commands the respect of his staff and players while being one of the guys at the same time.

During Big 12 media days today, Ahmad Dixon said Briles is so laid back that he?ll occasionally rap during practices. When I asked Briles about his closet rapping career, he answered with a lyric from the artist Drake.

?I can throw,? he said of his skills. ?I don?t know about [throwing] down, but I can throw every once in a while with the right rhythm and the right attitude in the right environment.?

?I don?t want to disrespect any artists, but we all did our time and started at different spots and now we?re here.?

He followed up his answer with a hearty chuckle. The best part ? no one knew what he had just said. In Drake?s song, ?Started From the Bottom? there is a line that says, ?started from the bottom now we?re here.?

He went on to say that, ?There are songs that you can use correctly for inspiration. I?ve been a music guy all of my life. I?ve always been inspired by music and lyrics.?

In my opinion, this only enhances the fact that Briles is the coolest coach in the conference. And it isn?t even close.

Welcome Back to Sports, Nate Silver

Nate Silver attends the 16th Annual Webby Awards.

Nate Silver at the Webby Awards on May 21, 2012, in New York City

Rejoice, sports fans: Nate Silver is back on our team. After three years as the New York Times? in-house statistical warlock, Silver has signed a new deal with ESPN, one that will allow him to indulge his interests in noninaugural balls.

Before he launched FiveThirtyEight, the one-time economic consultant developed a system to forecast the performance of baseball players?a tool he designed to help him win his fantasy league. But Silver isn?t just a baseball guy. In 2009, he helped ESPN devise the Soccer Power Index, an alternative to the hilariously inaccurate FIFA world rankings. (Brazil, which demolished Spain to win the Confederations Cup, is currently ranked an implausible No. 9 by FIFA compared to Spain?s No. 1. In the SPI, Brazil is No. 1 and Spain is No. 3.) He?s also done posts for the Times on why it?s better to be a No. 15 seed than a No. 8 in the NCAA Tournament, the flukiness (or lack thereof) of Jeremy Lin, and why Canadian teams don?t win the Stanley Cup.

What will ESPN?s new man do on his first day on the job? Though he?s (probably) not a warlock, Silver will have an army of researchers at his disposal and will be given the freedom to explore whatever sports questions he finds most fascinating. In a podcast with Bill Simmons last November, Silver said that, among other things, he was interested in the ?contract-year phenomenon??whether players do in fact perform better when they?re shooting for a big free-agent deal. That?s interesting and all, but I?ve got some other ideas. Here are eight more projects to get Silver started.

Create college football rankings that actually make sense. After this coming season, the BCS will be destroyed and shot into outer space, where intelligent beings on other planets can gaze upon it and learn from humanity?s mistake. Starting in 2014-15, there will be a four-team college football playoff, with the combatants chosen by a selection committee. Though it doesn?t take a genius to come up with something superior to the intentionally hobbled BCS computers, Silver has the authority and the platform to come up with some smart standings that fans, pundits, and the sport?s new selection committee will take seriously.

Fix the tennis rankings. Next to FIFA?s abomination, the points systems used by the ATP and WTA tours do the worst job of reflecting a sport?s real-life pecking order. This year, Rafael Nadal actually fell in the rankings after repeating as French Open champion. As Howard Bryant explained, the only way for a player to improve his standing is to get a better result?something that?s not possible if you?re repeating as champion of the same tournament year after year. That?s dumb. Should we create different rankings for different surfaces? Should you get bonus points for knocking off the No. 1 player? You tell me, Silver!

Figure out how NBA players move. In arenas across the land, there are ceiling-mounted cameras tracking every athlete?s every move. The mountains of data these SportVU cameras have dredged up are a rich bounty for sports analysts?just take a look at Zach Lowe?s Grantland story on how the Toronto Raptors are now able to determine exactly how their players should rotate on defense. For sports fans and researchers, the problem here is that teams usually treat these findings as if they?re nuclear launch codes. Just a few researchers, including Grantland contributor Kirk Goldsberry, have access to these SportVU goodies. Given ESPN?s huge investment in the NBA, I?m guessing that Silver, too, will be given the launch codes. Since the rest of us are in the dark, we?re going to depend on those in the know to figure out how the NBA ticks and to pass that knowledge on to the rest of us ignoramuses.

Create a new two-point conversion card. Football coaches are way too risk-averse, typically opting for the point after touchdown when a two-pointer is a sound strategic option. Most coaches use a simple card that helps the arithmetically challenged determine that going for two makes sense when you?re trailing by five points. A better card, like the one seen here, shows that going for two is the better probabilistic play in many, many different situations. This is a case where much of the work has already been done. Silver just needs to help create a small, easy-to-understand card, perhaps one featuring explanatory cartoons.

Kill the RPI. This one?s an easy target. Everyone agrees that the Ratings Percentage Index is terrible. It?s a metric that the NCAA uses to help sift college basketball teams for tournament selection, but it?s worse than many other measures at predicting outcomes. As Ken Pomeroy pointed out in Slate, ?three-quarters of the RPI is determined by a strength-of-schedule component. That means who you play is often more important than whether you win or lose.? And yet the NCAA, in its infinite nonwisdom, continues to use the RPI as part of its March Madness toolkit. ESPN?s the Basketball Power Index, masterminded by Dean Oliver, is superior to the RPI in every way. As a company man, Silver will be deployed to stump for it and perhaps even improve it, making it clear that the RPI is bad for America and that its defenders must be destroyed.

What baseball players are good at defense? Figure it out! There are a bunch of different systems that purport to measure how well baseball players field their positions: Range Factor, Ultimate Zone Rating, Revised Zone Rating, Defensive Runs Saved, Plus/Minus Runs Saved. These systems don?t often agree with one another. I?d like to know which of these systems will tell me, in the most accurate terms, precisely how bad Derek Jeter is at playing shortstop.

Build a better NBA. This one?s more theoretical than practical. The NBA salary cap is one of the sports world?s most restrictive, forcing teams to trade away emerging stars and making it monstrously difficult to keep a winning roster together. The league?s economic model also encourages tanking, with teams finding it makes long-term sense to purposefully become terrible and load up on high draft picks. There has to be a way to incentivize decent teams to stay decent, to discourage tanking, and to allow teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder to keep their cores intact. Perhaps the solution is to force LeBron James to play three games a year for every NBA team. But I?m guessing Silver can come up with something better.

Use stats to figure out who?s doping (and who?s totally clean). Is it possible to determine if an athlete is cheating simply by looking at his numbers? There?s a fascinating debate going on right now about whether such a thing is possible, and Tour de France champion Chris Froome is at the center of it. A bunch of statistical sleuths believe Froome?s climbing times are suspect, as they?re uncomfortably close to those of a doped-up Lance Armstrong. Baseball pundits, too, are asking whether Orioles slugger Chris Davis? home-run-heavy first half should raise our suspicions. These accusations, though, could be totally unfair. It?d be worth Silver?s time to do a deep dive on the stats of known dopers across a bunch of sports and determine whether there are statistical techniques that could transform our steroid witch hunts into informed steroid witch hunts. And if there aren?t statistical techniques that can do the job, it?d be great to know that, too?and to have someone pass that message along to Rick Reilly.
