Hackers to launch satellites to block censorship

"Let's take the Internet out of the control of terrestrial entities."

This call to arms, issued by hacker activist Nick Farr, is the rallying cry behind a new plan to launch satellites into space to prevent Internet censorship.

Farr, a spokesperson for the Germany-based Chaos Computer Club, outlined the group's mission at this week's Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, the BBC reported. Calling for an "uncensorable Internet in space," Farr outlined the CCC's Hackerspace Global Grid, a project that also will involve setting up low-cost ground stations to track and communicate with the fast-moving satellites.

The time is now

Farr, who introduced and began soliciting donations for the Hackerspace Global Grid this summer, said the project is now a top priority because of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a bill that some critics say could have catastrophic effects on freedom of communication and the way people connect to the Internet.

"Hackers are about open information; we believe communication is a human right," Farr said.

The CCC's only motive in launching the proposed satellites is knowledge, he said, and the desire to "put humanity back in space in a meaningful way."

Working with Constellation, a German aerospace research initiative, the Hackerspace Global Grid plans to have three prototype ground stations in place by the first half of 2012.

Tricky tech and a legal black hole

The hackers might not have an easy go of it, Alan Woodward, a computer science professor at the University of Surrey, told the BBC.

"Low-Earth-orbit satellites, such as have been launched by amateurs so far, do not stay in a single place but rather orbit, typically every 90 minutes," Woodward said. "That's not to say they can't be used for communications, but obviously only for the relatively brief periods that they are in your view."

"It's difficult to see how such satellites could be used as a viable communications grid other than in bursts," he added.

There's a legal black hole to contend with, as well: Outer space is not governed by the countries beneath it, Woodward explained, so while the CCC's satellites could function as planned, "any country could take the law into their own hands and disable the satellites."

Ford sales soar: Automaker tops 2 million units in 2011

For the first time since 2007, Ford Motor Co. reported Ford brand sales this year have officially topped 2 million vehicles.

Erich Merkle, Ford?s sales analysis manager, said Friday Ford is the first automotive brand to hit the 2-milllion-unit sales mark in the U.S. since 2007. Reaching the milestone secures Ford?s status as the best selling brand in the United States.

?Ford?s lineup of high-quality, fuel-efficient cars, utilities and trucks continues to attract more and more new customers,? Merkle said.

?With gasoline prices tracking higher than last year, customers continue to move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, whether they are passenger cars or utilities,? he added.

Both the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus achieve 40 mpg highway, while the Ford Explorer brings a class-leading 28 mpg highway with its new EcoBoost engine, he said.

Ford?s smallest utility, the fuel-efficient Escape, has achieved record sales volumes this year and is

America?s best-selling utility vehicle, Merkle added.

Overall, Ford brand small cars are on pace to post an increase of more than 20 percent this year. Ford brand utilities are tracking to post more than a 30 percent gain.

Earlier this week, TrueCar.com, which tracks sales data across the United States, estimated Ford Motor Co.?s overall sales increased 6.8 percent this month.

For December 2011, new light vehicle sales expected to increase 8.1 percent to 1.23 million units. Continued...

Meanwhile, incentive spending has dropped in December. The industry average incentive spending per unit will be approximately $2,563 in December 2011, which represents a decrease of 2.6 percent from November 2011 and down

3 percent from December 2010, TrueCar reported.

Used car sales are estimated to be 2.9 million units, up 1.7 percent from December 2010, and up 10.4 percent from November 2011.

?December?s sales rate was a continuation of the rather slow and steady recovery that now symbolizes 2011,? said Jesse Toprak, vice president of Industry Trends and Insights for TrueCar.com.

?This year was absent of a blockbuster sales month, but we see this pace of growth as healthy and sustainable in the coming year, where the industry is going to sell nearly 14 million units based on the merits of its products and improved economy,? he said.

CDC, FDA say powdered infant formula not tainted (AP)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Four cases of infants sickened by a rare bacteria sometimes linked to powdered formula, including two who died, are not related and parents can continue using the products to feed their babies, two federal agencies announced Friday.

Scientists with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration tested various types of powdered infant formula and distilled water, known as nursing water, and found no cases of contamination by Cronobacter sakazakii.

Four babies, including one in Missouri and another in Florida who died, were sickened by the bacteria that are found naturally in the environment and in plants such as wheat and rice. Cronobacter also has been traced to dried milk and powdered formula.

Two other babies, in Illinois and Oklahoma, were sickened by the bacteria but survived.

The Missouri baby, Avery Cornett of Lebanon, Mo., died earlier this month after appearing lethargic and displaying what his family said were signs of a stomach ache. Tests at a Springfield hospital showed he had Cronobacter, and he died a few days later after being removed from life support.

The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it's deemed extremely dangerous to babies less than 1 month old and those born premature.

Avery's death prompted the CDC to ask public health officials from around the country to look for other cases of Cronobacter infection among infants. That request generated reports from three other states about their cases.

Avery's case also prompted Wal-Mart and several other national retailers to pull Enfamil Newborn formula, which Avery had consumed before getting sick, from 3,000 stores until the batches could be tested for contamination. Those tests came back negative, CDC announced Friday.

"The FDA tested factory sealed containers of powdered infant formula and nursery water with the same lot numbers as the opened containers collected from Missouri and no Cronobacter bacteria were found," the FDA said.

Powdered infant formula is not sterile, and experts have said there are not adequate methods to completely remove or kill all bacteria that might creep into formula before or during production.

The FDA said it gets four to six reports a year of infant infections related to formula and has not found a powder that tested positive since 2002. The CDC said with recent increased awareness of the illness, it has received 12 cases in 2011.

"CDC laboratory tests of samples provided by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services found Cronobacter bacteria in an opened container of infant formula, an opened bottle of nursery water and prepared infant formula," the agency said Friday. "It is unclear how the contamination occurred."

CDC also tested bacteria in the Illinois case and found it differed genetically from that found in the Missouri case. It said bacteria from the Oklahoma and Florida cases were not available for testing.

Forget Pay N' Spray: GTA3 for Android allows proper user mods

A group of cool cats has figured out how to add new textures and other mods to cars and buildings in the Android version of Grand Theft Auto 3. The XDA Developers forum is a good place to start for mod file downloads and the files can be inserted in the sdcard/android/data/com.rockstar.gta3/files/gta3/ directory (which happens to be the same directory structure as the PC version). Click the break to see a video of one of the car mods in action and remember, your ride isn't ideal for drive-by shootings unless Xzibit says so.
