UK lawmakers: Rupert Murdoch unfit to lead company

(AP) ? News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch is unfit to lead his global media empire, an influential group of British lawmakers said Tuesday.

In a scathing report, the lawmakers said his company misled Parliament about the scale of phone hacking at one of its tabloids.

Parliament's cross-party Culture, Media and Sport committee said News International, the British newspaper division of Murdoch's News Corp., had deliberately ignored evidence of malpractice, covered up evidence and frustrated efforts to expose wrongdoing.

Murdoch has insisted he was unaware that hacking was widespread at his now-shuttered News of the World tabloid, blaming underlings for keeping him in the dark.

The legislators said if that was true, "he turned a blind eye and exhibited willful blindness to what was going on in his companies."

"We conclude, therefore, that Rupert Murdoch is not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company," the report by the panel of 11 lawmakers said.

Labour Party panel member Tom Watson said the decision had not been unanimous, and Conservative lawmakers Louise Mensch ? who opposed condemning Murdoch ? said the split had been along party lines.

The judgment on Murdoch implies that News Corp., which he heads, is also not a fit to control British Sky Broadcasting, in which News Corp. holds a controlling stake of 39 percent.

The committee agreed unanimously that three key News International executives misled Parliament by offering false accounts of their knowledge of the extent of phone hacking at the News of The World ? a rare and serious censure which usually demands a personal apology to legislators.

Murdoch closed down the 168-year-old Sunday tabloid last July amid public revulsion at the hacking of voice mail messages of celebrities and victims of crime, including murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Throughout the scandal, News International's approach "was to cover up rather than seek out wrongdoing," the legislators wrote.

Meat Glue: Pink Slime's Classier Cousin [Wtf]

That juicy filet mignon you just shelled out $25 for may not in fact actually be filet mignon. Chances are, it may well be a patty of scraps pressed together and held in place with a powdered chemical commonly known as "meat glue." More »

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? NATO said a Taliban leader and another insurgent were killed Tuesday after they opened fire on coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan. Villagers in the area disputed the statement and insisted the victims were civilians killed during a pre-dawn raid.

According to the alliance, the Taliban leader killed in Laghman province's Qarghayi district was wanted for coordinating roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the area. NATO also said that several other insurgents were detained in the Afghan-led operation.

But in the village of Bolan, Mohammad Aziz Khochi said soldiers stormed his house at about 2 a.m. Tuesday and that two of his nephews were killed in the raid.

"My sister thought that thieves had come to the house and she started shouting," Khochi said. "One of her sons came out and the American forces shot him and killed him. Then her other son came out and they killed him."

Khochi, who was in the house at the time of the raid, said the security forces detained seven other men. He said many of the people staying in his house were government workers and that one of his slain nephews was a member of the local district council.

Khochi also questioned why the troops had to come at night, saying they should have asked those in the house to report to the governor's office to answer any accusations against them.

Another villager who witnessed the raid, Abdul Malik Abdul Rahimzai, also denied the victims were insurgents and insisted the soldiers "attacked innocent people" who were unarmed.

Night raids are extremely controversial in Afghanistan, and under a recent U.S.-Afghan deal, they must now be led by Afghan forces.

In Helmand province, NATO said a joint Afghan and coalition force detained a Taliban leader and several of his subordinates in Washer district on Tuesday. It said he was the senior Taliban leader for the province's Kajaki district and was responsible for roadside bombings and suicide attacks, including one earlier this month on a district police building.

Candice Crawford Shows Off Post-Baby Body: Wow!

Tony Romo's wife Candice Crawford attended the White House Correspondents dinner this weekend and looked amazing. Up there with Michelle Obama!

The pair were among the guests at the political/media/celebrity "nerd prom," and made quite an entrance in her first public event since becoming a mom.

Just three weeks after Candice give birth to son Hawkins Crawford Romo, the blonde beauty was slim and stunning in a white, figure-hugging gown.

Three weeks, people. Talk about a weight loss touchdown, or something.

Candice and brother Chace, who stars on Gossip Girl, definitely hit the genetic lottery. Which got us thinking: Who would you rather ... you know?

Insert Coin: Rowdy Robot creates Bluetooth 4.0 beacons that activate automatic alerts

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin: Rowdy Robot creates Bluetooth 4.0 beacons that activate automatic alerts

It's no secret that Bluetooth 4.0 is energy efficient, but now a startup called Rowdy Robot wants to use it for something rather less predictable than monitoring heart palpitations during your Tour de France training. A network of little beacons ("t?ds") interacts with your iPhone or iPad and lets you receive movement-triggered alerts: like when your kid wanders too far, or when they finally return home after hanging out with the corner cartel. Many uses will be similar to NFC tags, but with the advantage of a vastly greater range of up to 500ft -- plus a single beacon can last for years on a single battery. Of course, it could also work with location-based services, triggering automatic updates as you pedal past the Arc de Triomphe -- but none of this will happen unless check out the video after the break and help Rowdy Robot meet their $50,000 target.
