Drinking a factor in some fatal truck accidents | Camden County ...

Recently released statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are sure to worry any New Jersey driver as it turns out there are a good number of truck drivers who are drinking alcohol before being in charge of the operation of thousands of pounds of truck. This in turn has led to many fatal accidents across the country.

When looking at statistics for 2010 it was learned the truck drivers involved in fatal accidents had been drinking alcohol prior to the crash in 3 percent of the accidents. Of those, 2 percent were over the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.08 percent. Many of those drivers even had blood alcohol contents higher than 0.15 percent, which means the drivers were either close to twice the legal limit or even more than twice over the limit.

This point is rather important as it turns out that 70 percent of the 10,228 fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2010 involved a driver who was close to two times the legal driving limit.

In general, no one who is intoxicated should ever get behind the wheel of any type of motor vehicle as being impaired greatly increases a person's chances of getting into an accident. However, it is especially dangerous when the drunk driver is a truck driver as the potential for an accident with serious injuries or death is particularly high due to the sheer size and weight of the truck.

In accidents where a person is injured due to an intoxicated truck driver it is also important to remember those hurt may be able to receive compensation.
