Romney: Candidate's comments on rape "inexcusable"

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney says a GOP Senate candidate's comments on rape are "insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong."

Romney says he found Missouri Congressman Todd Akin's comments "offensive." Akin said in an interview Sunday that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in "a legitimate rape" and that conception is rare in such cases.

Romney says he has "an entirely different view." The presumptive GOP presidential nominee also called on Akin to correct his statements.

Akin, who is running to unseat Missouri's Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, issued a statement Sunday saying he "misspoke" during the interview. The statement did not specify on which points or comments.

Romney responded to Akin's comments Monday in an interview with the National Review.
